I was at my mother in laws house yesterday when I noticed the prettiest little tree. I asked her what it is, she told me it was a weeping cherry. I asked my sister in law and she told me "Mom is mixed up, it's a weeping crabapple "Candied Apple" so I figured I better look it up just to see before I go out and buy the wrong tree. However, I have been online and I can not find a full grown Candied Apple to compare it with. Do any of you have pictures of this particular tree so I can see if it is the right one?
Thanks!
Weeping Crabapple "Candied Apple"
Willis,
I don't have any pictures of mature 'Candied Apple' crabs but would just offer a word of caution. It has the potential to suffer pretty badly from apple scab. Scab infection on particular plants vary from one part of the country to another so you may be safe in MI. I would suggest watching you mother's tree for a year to be sure that it doesn't defoliate or look poorly by the end of summer. She may also be able to give you info on how it looked from years past. Scab can also affect the fruit and turn the shiny, burgandy apples into an OSU fan's dream: crimson and gray. To the best of my knowledge, 'Candied Apple' has fallen out of favor of most growers in the midwest because of disease problems so I'd suggest proceeding with caution. I would add that it is a pretty little thing in spring.
Regards,
Ernie
My mother in law has had that tree for over 10 years without a problem. I asked her today about it. Fully matured and just a beautiful little tree. I can see it probably is like yours Donna.....only bigger. How long have you had yours Donna?
Kelly
Mine has been in location, going on 12 years now. The yard is really pretty now, but don't have much time to take photos as trying to get my seedlings in the ground.
Donna
How'd I get dragged into this Ernie :)
Willis
Kelly, I had one at a previous house and unfortunately I have no pictures (somewhere in the move in 03, they all disappeared). Anyway, the tree is still there and doing beautifully. It would be about 15 or more yrs old by now. I never had any problems with disease or scab on it.
Willis,
This was before the A.M. coffee and the O.P. is from Willis, MI. My brain works wierd when lacking fuel I guess. Or it does all the time, really. Well, anyway.....What does the Morton Arb look like these days? I had a brief moment and saw the pine picture from there that you posted. Or was that someone else too? ;-) I was thinking of looking it over next Sunday P.M. That or the ChiBot if it works out that I can get up there.
Regards,
Ernie
