A sturdy shade tree for Wisconsin

Fond Du Lac, WI(Zone 5a)

I would like to plant some trees near our house to eventually shade it and cut down on a/c costs. Does anyone have any suggestions for a strong tree? How far away should it be planted?

Depends on the soil type, and the depth of the building's foundations. If you have shrinkable clay and fairly shallow foundations (a metre or less), don't plant any trees within about 25-30m, or you may risk subsidence damage to the house. If you have deep foundations (2 metres or more), and/or non-shrinkable soil, then you can plant them much closer.

E-guys are all good, but tend to be slow growers. Red Maple and Northern Red Oak are stout trees with at least moderate-fast growth rates. 'Skyline' Honey Locust and 'Redmond' American Linden are also a rapid growers.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I've got a plan now!!! :)
