can these southern magnolias be saved?

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

we purchased two larger southern magnolias this past fall and they took a beating with the warm/freeze/warm /freeze weather we had....

the one higher on the slope has a bit of green in some branches and i've only found one of the few remaining leaves with any green in it

the second one a bit lower has a few more leaves greening and possibly a little more green in the branches

we hate to give up on them and we do have the replacement warranty from lowe's
so, is there any hope?
btw....they are approx 20 feet past the drip line of black walnuts (we planted before we knew anything about the juglone)...don't know if this impacting as well as the freeze or not

thanks,
lynda

Looks like cold damage to me, they may come back but you'll need to give them some time to see what parts are really dead and what parts are going to come back. Do you have a time limit on when you can return them? If not then I'd be patient and see what they look like in a few months. I don't know anything about magnolias and susceptibility to juglone, but I think the prime suspect in the current damage is the cold weather.

the warranty is for a year, so we have until october
i'm really hoping they come around...i love magnolias

Magnolias are sensitive to juglone and 20 feet is well within the 80 feet or so you can expect juglone to kill. If you can replace them, I'd say return them now and plant the new ones much farther away from the black walnuts.

They might limp along for a year or two but they will eventually die.

There are some trees that aren't affected by juglone, including cherries of all types, poplar, oak, sycamore.

ah, i was wondering if it was a double whammy on them....thankfully customer service isn't requiring the whole tree to be brought in....we had to have them delivered.....the azaleas we lost to "the" black walnuts have to be taken....a sad sight!
