Acer pseudoplatanus 'Eskimo Sunset'

PICKETT, WI(Zone 5a)

On some websites, usda.gov, for example list Acer pseudolatanus (Sycamore maple) as a invasive and noxious weed. Some states ban this plant. I found Eskimo Sunset in Heronswood Nursery catalog that sells rare and unusual plants. Is this particular plant not invasive as some of the other sycamore maples? I see some gardeners have posted comments that the tree grows very large, and to grow it as long as you have the room. Heronswood states the tree grows up to 20 feet and to space it 15 feet away from other trees. Those of you who do have this tree, what is your experience with its growth habits?

The ones at my job might still be too young to be too pestiferous but I can't imagine they won't be troublesome later on. It only takes a couple of viable seeds and a little reversion to perpetuate a problem.

I'd like to get rid of them but they do have a very interesting leaf and my boss really likes them.

Just because some nursery sells it doesn't mean it's not invasive, many nurseries sell things that are invasive, if not in their part of the country then in somebody else's. I've seen even reputable mail order places have some nasty stuff available. I don't have any personal knowledge of this one though, just sharing my experience that just because someone sells it doesn't mean it's a good plant.

Is 'Eskimo Sunset' one of those rather nasty-looking mop-headed horrors with yucky-coloured leaves, like A. p. 'Brilliantissimum'?

If yes, then no need to worry, they produce few or no seed, being of such sickly constitution that they don't have enough energy to devote to reproduction.

But I'd get rid of it anyway, so as to use the space to plant something more interesting ;-)

Gosh, I wish I knew what A.p. 'Brilliantissimum' looked like just so that I could share in the dispite.

'Eskimo Sunset' isn't very sickly, though, and might prove to be just as randy as its parent.

Thanks. I decided not to buy the tree and stick to some good 'ole native trees and shrubs.....for now.
