Kousa Dogwood

Caldwell, NJ

Thinking about a Kousa Dogwood -- I realize it's a late bloomer. Does this mean that the leaves are always out when the "flowers" first appear?

Central, AL(Zone 8a)

I have several Kousas of different varieties and they all leaf out first. One of them just started to bloom yesterday ("summer stars") and has had leaves on it for at least a month.

Do you have a suggestion for a white one that grows to a max of 25-30 feet for (zone 6)?
I am looking for REALLY white "flowers" -- nothing leaning towards yellow.

I'm not an expert in this area. My "summer stars" so far is on the green side of white but the flowers only emerged about 3 days ago so they probably will whiten up. The rest of mine are pink...
Anyone else have any suggestions?

PS check out Plant Files for ideas. How about this one?

As far as I'm aware (and I've seen a lot of kousa dogwood around here, as well as the extensive trials at Bernheim), the non-white flowering ones are all some shade of pink. Then there's the variegated foliage and weeping types...

The flowers/bracts (as with most plants) do go through a maturing of color from tight bud to abscission. As passpink mentions, starting out on the green side of white is normal. Whitening up to dazzling comes next, and then maturing/fading through cream after pollination is pretty much the normal sequence.

'Milky Way' is one of the old selections, but since it was named from several seedlings, you get a variety of results but usually all will be very white and quite floriferous. 'Summer Stars' is pretty nice.

Best answer is to see the plant yourself. They should be blooming in your area now (or soon will be); check out a garden center or arboretum on a sunny day.
