It disrupts the structure of the soil, according to what I've heard. Others worry about earthworms. Actually, every time you use a trowel, spade or shovel you're disturbing the soil structure.

Messes up the physical structure and disturbs the myriad of organisms that give soil its vitality, It started centuries ago when it was thought plants 'ate' soil so it had to be chopped into little pieces. Here's a link.
