This has probably already been discussed, but I need some help. This is a long established tree and since we moved here in 1990 it has had hundreds of sucker branches all over it. It actually looks furry. Really awful. Why does this happen and what can we do about it? We are organic gardeners. Thanks for your help.
sucker branches on pecan
It sounds like bunch disease. There is no cure, only removal of the tree. I have removed about five of my smaller ones that had it. On some trees the whole thing is affected, and other trees only have some branches affected. http://www.ento.okstate.edu/ddd/diseases/bunchdisease.htm
Thanks for your answer escambiaguy. I will try to get the county agent out here. That's pretty difficult to do. He seems to be very over-worked, but it's worth a try. I never heard a name for this problem, but I have seem a few other pecans with the same problem in the area.
