Lilacs

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Do any of you grow Wedgewood Blue or President Lincoln? The photos I see of these two look pretty blue. Are they really? Is there a clear pink lilac too?
I have the dark violet one and a lavender one. I have thoroughly enjoyed these this year and would love to add a couple.

What do you grow?

I planted a President Lincoln last year, but am anxiously awaiting its first flowering this year; so can't really help with exact color description. In photos, it looked like a nice clear blue to me: here's hoping.

Me too. Let me know, when it blooms.

Lenjo,

We used to sell 'President Lincoln' quite a while ago and I don't remember what the color was like but 'Wedgewood Blue' is truly a nice, medium blue and if my memory is correct, the flowers are a bit smaller than 'President Lincoln'. Not small, just smaller than the other. You'd think that I'd have a picture on file since I sell it at work but I guess the old saying holds true: Familiarity breeds contempt. Or at least in this case, neglect since I chose to ditch a couple of other lilacs and kept 'Wedgewood Blue'.

Ernie, are you a nurseryman or own a retail nursery? I have someone who is checking at the Hulda Klager lilac gardens in Washington for me but if she is unsuccessful could I possibly order something through you.

Lenjo:

In case Ernie can't help you, Song Sparrow Farm carries this lilac. The plants I've purchased came from up that way.

Lenjo,

I work for a retail store in Central IL. We've not made the move to get into online business. As VV says, Song Sparrow is a good place to get it.

Thanks VV. I ordered a catalog. I noticed they also have another pink lilac I have been looking for.

Ernie, thank you too. Malusman , are you into apples?
With a name like that you must be the expert.

Lenjo,

At the time that I originally signed up at DG (some years ago) I was excited about crabapples. I will save the self-deprecatory humor and let VV have a field day talking about misguided youth. ;-) I traveled to OSU to see James Chatfield and Eric Draper talk about Malus at the Secrest Arboretum and got to see the premiere of the Crabapple Song played on guitar and sung by the two after the seminar! I think I still have the lyrics floating around somewhere. I had recently finished reading Fiala's book on crabs (made an ill-fated trip to Falconskeape which had been destroyed for a subdivision or something) and was positive that great things were right around the corner for the genus. I was planning my Malusetum; it's still a bit of a joke amongst myself and other longterm employees. Time passed; I didn't really ever use my DG membership and my enthusiasm waned for my beloved genus. I re-signed up here about a year ago and my name was still intact, so I kept it. I like the plants and think they're fine but I've let a lot of the stuff about them that I had known, slip away. Instead, I've been flirting around with all sorts of genera and (at the risk of castigation here at the T&S forum) even taking a bit of liking to perennials. Well, anyway.......you're welcome for the advice.

Regards,
Ernie

Thank you for the history, Ernie. So have you got a particular perennial that you have a fancy for. I assume you mean herbaceous perennial as opposed to woody shrubs. I go through phases of wanting to collect this or that kind of perennial. Right now all the new heucheras are quite fascinating. Terra Nova out here has developed lots of em and I have hankering to go visit said nursery. It is not too far but only wholesale. At one time we had nursery license for our farm but let that lapse when we quit raising dahlias. Our main thrusts here in our little corner of Oregon is marionberries and hazelnuts.
