Ground covers for lilies

Chepachet, RI(Zone 5b)

Hi--I'm absolutely new to lilies, having just planted some Casa Blanca, Aruba, and Lollipop lilies last fall. They are starting to sprout and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas for some groundcover plantings to go with them--you know, something to hide their stalks and give their roots a bit of shade. They are in full-to-part sun. The lady at the local nursery suggested lady's mantle. I'd love to go with a sun-loving fern but try finding that in New England! Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I'm trying Queen Anne's Lace and Chicory in the lily bed. I grow tulips in the same bed and when they are done, the lillies bloom. I have used yarrow and coreopsis in that bed, too. Sun loving ferns would be nice though . . .

Geraniums are nice (not pelargoniums)

Gaillardia are a tough groundcover.

And gaillardia are easy from seed.

Iris and daylily are nice, but, kind of expensive.

YankeeCat--I really like your idea--I saw a picture of that here somewhere. Thanks!

Dale--I really liked your ideas too! LOL--now I have to pick!

Thanks again!

I just planted some Cleome to hide the stems and know there'll be thousands of seedlings for next year so I hope it works. I like to keep the colors similar to the lilies.

I mostly use gaillardia, geraniums, yarrow, and lettuce--some years all the lettuce-planting room I can scrounge up, is under the lilies. Oh, for a larger yard...

You could try Lysimachia nummularia or moneywort. The variety in the pic is 'Aurea'

I love that Lysimachia nummularia! I have it in a gold/green hosta garden. It has to be the most trouble free plant ever.
