Understory Maple.....

Ellijay, GA(Zone 7a)

....Anyone growing this eastern U. S. native? I like this ones foliage better than A. pensylvanicum, it's understory counterpart!

Nope, I don't grow that. Extremely attractive plant. Great photo!

Yeah, Johnny, I've got it. Mine produced its first spiky flowers this year. Very light and airy. Cool tree. I recently saw its Asian pair, A. ukurundense, which had strikingly colorful bark. It was dormant when I saw it, so I didn't get to enjoy the foliage and possible flowers.

Scott, If your lucky, come September you may expect fruit of this nature!

BTW, for years I assumed that this species was included in the "Snake Bark" group but of course we know better now........

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that. I might get fruit! The bark on my A. spicatum isn't especially showy, but when I first saw that A. ukurundense at Boone County Arboretum, I thought it was one of the snakebarks. Transluscent green, almost.

...Finally!....some of the 'SPIKES' are in full bloom...seems to be several species of insects acting as pollinators.

Johnny, I just got back from the Smokies and found this tree. It did have me puzzled because we don't have them here.

A high elevation plant indeed!......The 'air temp' up there may be even more impressive.

Oh yes, it was 96° in Sevierville, but when I got to the Appalachian trail in the park it was only 70°.
