Strange Bloom

Pueblo West, CO

I haven't planted any Morning Glories yet. This one came back from seed from last year. Except, I didn't plant anything like this one. I really like it.

Looks like you got "Purple Feathers". Maybe that seed waited a year to germinate.

It does look like the feathered mg .. Phicks did you start the feathers I sent you yet?

Hmmm I have never planted any Purple Feathers.

Hmmmm, could they have "flown" in? :o) JK

The trait is likely to be recessive so one possibility I could imagine is some of your purpureas could have been carriers for this trait? That is a sort of educated guess/question combination. Did you plant purpureas?

This bloom is by the purple feathers one.

Have you planted purple purpureas with no feathering in the past? I`m just curious if maybe you got some cross pollination with a neighbor who has feathered purpureas or if your flowers carried for the feathering...something like that.

The last pic is what I had last year with no feathering. I do grow other Mg's so maybe it cross pollinated?

I don`t know if the trait for feathering is dominant or recessive. If you grew a purple purpurea and then the next year you get a double purple then it is possible cross pollination over time could be the cause of the changes in the way the flowers look.

I think your feathered purple is very pretty. You might want to try and hand pollinate some pods and see if they come back again. They are nice.

Good thinking Gardner. But I I think it oculd be like those dahlias. At the end of the day they put all the tubers they dropped during the day in a basket and package them with all the tags they dropped. Have you ever dropped a mg seed? lol Me too. At least this one was a very pleasant surprise, or mystery. That just makes it all the more fun.
We love fresh pictures here on this forum. Frank

Yes, as Frank has suggested you could have got some mixed up seeds for sure. I found what appeared to be some tan purpurea seeds mixed in my SOH (ipomoea nil) seed packet. I planted them seperate since I could see the difference. With the purpurea seeds the double and single flower seeds can possibly look exactly the same.

Thanks everyone. Yep, I think it's a keeper! I hope I get more good surprises like this one was.

Just curious here - Sunny, have you by any chance planted any kind of double I. purpurea at all either last year or in previous years? When The Fragrant Path sent me 36 bonus seeds of 'Double Blackie' last year, only one of them was double - it looked like: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/126526/ - not like the paler ones in PlantFiles

9 seeds germinated, 1 looking like the above image, 3 were feathered double deep rose pink and the rest were single purple, like your http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3462424 .

I was told that their Double Blackie appeared from time to time when an unnamed double red was grown near an unnamed single purple (both I. purpurea).

Soooo, the possibilities expand.

You mention

"I was told that their Double Blackie appeared from time to time when an unnamed double red was grown near an unnamed single purple (both I. purpurea)."

I honestly don't think that the possibilities are expanding so much as whoever told you this is doing some 'very fuzzy' speculating...

That's a nice shade of purple.. It really stands out. Lucky you.
