I just visited my first local nursery and was asking the expert there if Flowering Cherry trees do well in this area. I'd like to plant an ornamental tree in my front yard and am leaning towards a Yoshino Cherry tree. I happened to be in D.C. one year when the Cherry Blossoms were everywhere and I've been in love with them ever since. I also like the Kwanzan. But the guy at my nursery kept saying that Taiwan Cherry Trees bloom early here. I didn't think much about it at the time because I don't really care when they bloom, just as long as they do. But then it hit me, maybe he means they're in bloom longer when the bloom early.
I'm new at gardening so maybe this is a silly question. But I was just wondering if the length of bloom time varies among the different Cherry trees? If so, does anyone know the differences between the Yoshino, Kwanzan and Taiwan.....or where I can find that info?
Thanks in advance!
Are early bloomers preferable?
Should you get a surprise frost in early spring you will lose the bloom. Late bloomers usually avoid a killing frost. It doesn't mean they bloom for a longer period of time. There are several posters here who can give you great advice on the best cultivar for your region. I'm sure you'll be hearing from them soon.
