Bent sprout

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a sprout tip come up bent, 45 to 60 degrees?

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Yes, it usually doesn't do much of anything or, if it does bloom, the flower is usally misshapen. I think it's weather thing, but not sure.

I feel for you...one of my 'Casa Blanca' did the same thing. I was thinking it was from a late cold snap after a warm period. Another tip turned completely brown. As this is my first year growing lilies, I wasn't sure what causes these problems or what I should do (if anything) with the plants. I'm definitely open for suggestions!

My "On Wisconsin" came up like that and it looks like it quit growing at about 3 or 4 inches:(

Upon a closer look I realized small slugs were chewing on the stems, I looked because another one started doing this. I put out some slug bait for the second one in hopes of saving it. Slugs seem to love wood chip mulch.

I have several that were nipped by the cold weather, pretty much quit growing and have squirrelly foliage. Don't expect them to do anything at all this year.

Have you ever seen one tie itself in a knot??

I've got a couple that look like that, Moby. They frosted right off and said 'forget it" for the year. Boo hoo.

We also have wood chip mulch in our flower beds and we've had to put slug bait out. I imagine the neighbors thought my DH and I were crazy if they saw us outside at night with flashlights checking out the slugs eating the bait LOL. It was pretty gross and interesting at the same time!

How big do they get in Ohio? The ones up here are pretty small, maybe 1/4" to 1/2" max. I know on the west coast they are enormous.

Well, before the other night, any slugs that I saw were a tan/light brown color and 1/2" or smaller. And most (many) of the ones we saw eating the bait were about that size. However, we did see another type (?) of slug that was easily 3" long and a mottled brown color with it's little eye appendages (?) wiggling around. Very much looks like a snail minus the shell. When I saw the first one of these, I let out a noise that got my DH's attention LOL! When they ate the bait, they left behind a big slimey mess where they were laying. I have a digital camera. I'm not sure how well it'll take night photos. I'll try to take a picture of one. Then the neighbors will really think we're crazy :~)

Well, I have to say, I went out tonight and looked in the flower beds. Not very many slugs and none of the big ones. So, the good news is that the slug bait we're using must be working! It will be an ongoing battle and we'll have to make sure we put the bait down regularly. If I do see another of those weird, big slugs I will try to snap a picture. We're expecting rain at the end of the week for a few days so more slugs may pop up.

I looked in the Bug Files and found a slug that looks very similar to what we saw in our beds. I don't know how to link to it but if you look under Slugs and Snails, look for the Spotted Leopard Slug, Giant Leopard Slug (Limax maximus). The pictures by renwing look the closest to what we saw. Totally gross LOL.

I didn't even see the bugfiles tab and I have been on here a year.LOL They are kinda gross when they get that big.

I've got a couple that look like gnomes tromped on them--or the frost boogers. Still , more up & growing than last year. THANK YOU Plantskydd!

I've been looking for Plantskydd locally. So far, I haven't found it but there are a couple of other places I was going to look before ordering it. If I end up having to order, any suggestions from where?

Did you check their site for Ohio? I don't know what would be a reasonable distance for you, but there are several locations listed:

Thanks for the info on Plantskydd! Sometimes I forget to check web sites for that type of info LOL. It'll be a year in August since we got our first computer. Learning something new all the time. Best web site yet is DG, by far! Unfortunately, there wasn't a place selling Plantskydd really close to where we live (not in our county). It'll probably be easier and quicker to order it.

I was checking it out again as I'd forgotten who carried it around here, so thought I'd pass on the locate site just in case they would have one near you. You'll get it faster ordering, probably. Sometimes they say someone has it and what that means is they will order it for you if you ask! Luckily, our local Fleet Farm stores carry it, so I'll have some choices. I need it for the cabin. It's either that or make chicken wire tents for everything. Got through tulip season that way, but not my first choice for garden design!

The deer here are pretty bold. They'll walk up into a yard with a dog on a chain once they realize how far the dog can go. One day I saw a young deer acting in such a way towards our neighbor's dog that it appeared to be taunting it! I'd never seen anything like it. We're trying everything we can, short of putting in a fence, to keep them from mowing everything down in our yard. Since all of our flower beds are temporary until we get some drainage issues with our lot fixed, we haven't invested heavily in plants. But once we start really landscaping the backyard (they rarely come to the front of the house), we'll have to watch what we plant. Of course, some plants that I've seen as deer-resistant (I know that doesn't mean deer-proof LOL) were already in our backyard and had been getting chewed on by the deer. My husband's favorite plant is the peony. We have one in the front. I've seen it on several lists of deer-resistant plants and am thinking of planting some in the back. We have a hillside that's a mess with brambles, poison ivy, grape vine and stinging nettle but, of course, the deer leave it alone :~)

The only place locally carrying Plantskydd is the local Earl May at $19.95 a quart pre-mixed. That's about one trip around my garden. I buy a big 2.2 pound box of powder & mix up my own in milk jugs. I use 2 cups of mix to 3 quarts of water, shake well & set for a day to settle the foam. I pour it into my sprayer thru a little strainer. I have plenty to use and share at a decent cost. My sis in law Julierock is seeing her hostas unmolested for the first time in years. And i get to see my lilies bloom. Don't overspray or you can stunt growth.

Zanesville, OH(Zone 6a)

We went around to some local nurseries to check plants and deer-stuff. No Plantskydd (thought I'd just check). We've been using this spray (Deer Solution in a blue spray bottle) that we used all last summer and so far nothing has been eaten (and I've seen deer, hoove-prints and droppings in the yard). Of course, we have more plants this year that they might find tasty...lilies, daylilies, etc., so time will tell, I guess.
