We have a daphne "Summer Ice" that has something strange happening with it. It is quite healthy, seeming to love its home. But on three different branches, the leaves look like a Briggs Moonlight. They are a slightly different shape than the Summer Ice, and are completely yellow with green centers. I know the Briggs is the reverse, i.e. green edges with a yellow center, but they are the identical shade of yellow and green. I'm curious if anybody else has had this experience, and wondering whether we could slip them and actually get a shrub that was the other color. Thoughts?
Daphne help wanted...
I can't help you with your question directly, but perhaps you could contact someone at the Daphne Society? I am mad for Daphne's and am thinking about joining. I ran across this article recently and there is contact informtion for the author as well as a link to the DS at the bottom. Do you grow Briggs Moonlight? I have just spent a rediculous amount of money having two 3 gal. Briggs Moonlight shrubs shipped from Oregon, but I just adore them. It is a risk, but I hope they take.
Please post an update. I'd be very interested in your outcome and progress. Good luck!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this. For some reason I didn't notice the response. Anyway, our Briggs is small and we're going to be giving it a little "help" shortly. As to the "sport," last week we were visiting a small nursery in Oregon and they are working to grow a sport from Briggs that they think is hardier than the Briggs. Interestingly enough, it looks exactly like the "sport" that is appearing on our Summer Ice. Go figure! So, when the time of year for slipping this rolls around, we are definitely going to give it a go to see what we get. Also as we were visiting gardens last week, we ran across a Briggs in a person's yard that was probably 3'x3'. Talk about plant lust!! It was absolutely stunning.
Cheers!
Is it possible to grow a Daphne from seed or does it have to be cuttings? They may not even grow in SW Missouri Zone 6.
Named cultivars aren't going to come true from seed so those are definitely better done with cuttings. For straight species I'm not sure how well they grow from seed.
Thanks
