Sophora Secundiflora (Texas Mountain Laurel or Mescal Bean)

Baker, LA(Zone 8b)

I need a source to mail order establish plants of this beautiful tree. The two places listed in the PlantScout section doesn't have them in their online catalog. Can any one help me?

Thanks

I would keep checking Forest Farm, they may not have them now but I know they do often carry them, so they probably just ran out temporarily. The other place I think I've seen them is Ecolage, their stuff is usually a bit pricey but very nice plants and usually pretty large.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Taxonomic note: it is no longer treated in the genus Sophora, having been transferred to a separate genus as Calia secundiflora

Nobody who sells it lists it that way yet though, at least not over on this side of the pond. It's so annoying when they keep changing the names of plants, like it wasn't confusing enough to begin with! I'm sure they had good reasons though.

ColibriGardener, ask the nurseryman at Home Depot to order one for you. Our local Home Depot has them in 1, 5 and 15 gallon containers. Buy the largest you can afford especially if you want to see blooms next year. They are very very slow growers.

Anybody know the northern most hardiness of this species?

Most of the info I've seen on it says 7b. Although on occasion things end up being hardier than they're given credit for so you never know!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Zone 7b here! I brought this lovely plant home to the SE USA, from the beloved SW USA region where it said to be native (I think). It hasn't grown much for me in the past two years. Though, it bloomed and gave me three clusters of flowers this spring. Any suggestions/thoughts?

They are very very slow growers. Fertilizing it will help a bit , but don't expect it to grow much faster.

Thanks bettydee. I'll do it pronto.

I bought 2 of these at Lowes a couple of years ago, and the one that gets lots of sun is doing great. It bloomed this spring for the 1st time. The other one is in mostly shade, and hasn't grown much at all. I don't do anything to them except water them occasionally.

Thanks, everyone for your tips! My Home Depot or Lowes in Louisiana may not carry them here but I will give them a try anyway. I'm trying to get my sister in Houston to find one for me. The local nurseries here just haven't gotten any this year.

Thanks again!
