I wintersowed Blue Ensign & Light Blue Flash in this container on March 30th. I covered the container with a double piece of heavy plastic and poked holes in it for air transpiration & to allow moisture in. The MG's germinated on April 14th; they were not nicked or soaked.
I took the plastic cover off today, and now I've created a taller little greenhouse for them as shown. They will still need protection here until late May.
I'm so impressed that the seedlings survived; we had quite a bit of snow and temperatures as cold as 12 F in early April.

That's impressive! And here I am, waiting around for warm weather so I can plant my seeds.
Way to go, Jo!!

Nice thread on wintersowing named MGs, Jo. Do you know which species Light Blue Flash is? Is it also Convolvulus tricolor, as is Blue Ensign?
I know that Shirley1md has successfully wintersown Ipomoea purpurea varieties in our zone of 7a.
And, after murdering some of Ron's Evolvulus nuttallianus when I sowed it last June 20, I murdered some more by wintersowing it in February. I still have 10 seeds left. They are tiny, so hard to nick. What does everyone think about sowing them on the surface of moistened perlite with the barest trickle of Jiffy Mix on top and more Jiffy Mix in the pot under 2" of perlite and then refrigerating the whole pot for a month?
Back to the topic, though, has anyone germinated any other MGs by wintersowing them?
I sowed some Fuji x Ukigumo F2 seeds in mid February with some sunflowers. The sunflowers got gigantic beyond my wildest dreams and the morning glories haven`t seen the light of day since they sprouted probably.
The morning glories are in there bless their little hearts. I just have to look for them. :)
The sunflowers and the morning glories did great. I forgot to cover them during the March cold spell and you would never have known. Maybe the sunflowers covered them and shielded them from the cold?
Synergistic effects of plants on each other during the wintersowing process sure would be an interesting direction to explore - especially when one of them has clobbering tendencies, but is being the good nurse crop to boot - lol.
Well, now we can add I. youjiro MGs to our list of possible wintersowable MGs for zone? Karen, what would you think about putting your zone up under your moniker when you post? - http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html?
There are some differences from zone to zone as to what has been successfully wintersown here:

Am really looking forward to seeing how that rambunctious duo performs for you this summer.
LOL Joseph.
Well, if you truly like the color, it's Opi 'Goldilocks Rocks'!
Note to self: keep feet out of photos...
Joseph - I think she said she planted Blue Ensign & Light Blue Flash in this pot in the first post . . . the Blue is brilliant! I think the white flowers would be the Light Blue Flash . . . . although from her pix, I'd say they should be called White Flash . . . although looking a bit closer I think I can see a faint blue hue.

Oh Joseph - sorry! LOL. Yes, Nichole is right. The light colored flowers with the yellow eye are 'Light Blue Flash'. They are only very faintly blue - the picture is fairly representative of their actual color. Kind of washed out. I doubt I'd bother with them again. I'd just do more Ensign Blue.
