your uncle sounds like a bit of a prankster!
how old are all of u
I am 29 with 15 years experience :) My chicks just got mashed taters, french fries and baked beans for treat. They will eat almost anything. Oh they polished off the cat food also, poor kitty I have to feed her on the rail of my porch.
rauchicks....your uncle sounds a lot like my DH and he is for sure pulling your leg. My
DH use to tell me off the wall stuff all the time and had great fun at it....until I caught on. I was the city girl and didn't know ANYTHING about country life.
I am 31, soon to be 32.
L2G......just wait until your chicks figure out all they have to do is fly higher to get the cat food! We too have to feed out cats up high in a spot the chickens are not allowed. Now the dog food......seems like a lost cause to get them to leave it alone, so we feed smaller amount several times a day. For some reason, the chickens just seem to love it! Ours too will eat about any scrap of anything......well, what they get after the dogs are done. I guess the chickens figure turn about is fair play?

lol i hear ya. I give my little dogs either canned dog food or dry cat food. they refuse to eat the dry dog food. I have a 40 lb bag of dog food that i give the chickens. Dont get me wrong they get their chicken feed in the evening when I go to put them up. Once I get their coop done they will have feed all the time just now i need them to get out so they are not cramped up when it is hot.
i'm only 10 soon to be 11 with 6 months of experience
I lived in the country my whole life and only had a cat then when i turned 8 i got a dog then i turned ten and got another dog and this april i hatched my first chick 1 out of 30 and the time after that i hatched 7 and 2 died
My chickens are thanking you all right now.... I went to a BBQ this weekend and when it came time to clean up, I asked that all the watermellon rinds be put in a bag for my chickens.... They went nuts over it and they left the rind paper tin. They love it... I have a fer rinds left over for the next couple of days....
Oh and the squash went over big as well...
Oh yes they love the squash also, I have mellons growing just for the chicks, I love watermellon but I dont eat it that often. Maybe I will sit out with the chickens(they will be chickens by the time the mellons are ripe) and eat a slice with them.
Are you sure they won't attack you for your melon too? much like they do when on gets a piece of something & they all give chase - even tho there is still more on the ground! lol. I might stand or sit on the other side of their pen. some of those big birds can be very ....um....persistant. They REALLY like their food......
lol, i gave mine noodles hte other day and they chased each other around their brooder, kept stealing it from each other...funniest thing ever! guess I need to go buy a watermelon now! lol!
for some reason my log in for got me so i had to redo it i'm really rauchicks

PFA, yea I am sure they would climb on me to eat the melon. This morning me and my coffee went out to let them out, and sure enough they were attacking me and my coffee cup. Must have been the color, yellow. Then when I am bent over cleaning the water jugs they climb up on my back and shoulders. When I am out there with them I have to take baby steps they are all over my feet. Silly things, they think I am their mommy. I guess I am.
my chickens have poop all over there feathers the smell and look disgusting wat am i suposed to do

I found out the like potato's as well. I had my boy Billy 2 1/2 years old help me gather eggs. He broke one so I went home scrambled it up and took it back to them... They chowed down.....
the only thing i have found so far they dont like is the tops off fresh okra.
Tia, I have found they don't like orange peel, either.
GG
the damerow book I have says not to feed them any citrus fruit. doesnt say why... just to not do it
I don't know why no citrus either--mine do like the oranges that fall from the tree once they break open on the ground. There is no way I can keep them away from all of them--I will just have to see if there are any bad consequences--they have been eating them for months now.
Does anyone know why they shouldn't have them?
Not me. I just noticed that mine wouldn't eat the rind. They eat the inside only. Maybe because it's bitter to the taste.
I haven't tried citrus but they do like diced necterines and apples. They also like
oatmeal w/ either applesauce or yogurt mixed in. It's funny watching them eat it-they almost try to slurp it up!
