New to Lilies

Valencia, PA(Zone 5b)

I am just beginning to get interested in lilies. When is the best time to plant the bulbs? Thanks, Karen Shaver aka liebran

The BEST time to plant lilies is fall but they can be successfully planted in spring. Spring planted bulbs will often be shorter the first year as they are trying to grow roots as well as sending up a stalk. Spring bulbs are frequently sprouted as the bulb is trying to grow. Personally I like to see a little sprouting on spring bulbs because I know they are alive and willing to grow. But either way, they are extremely addictive and beautiful.

I try to plant them as soon as I get them. Lilies never go completely dormant. Seeing that it is pretty cold up here, some of mine have to come into the house into the fridge for the winter. Those don't count. Warm zone 5, you can plant now if you find bulbs for sale now, but as Mainiac says, fall is best.

I am trying Lilies for the first time as well. I live in an apartment, does anyone have any ideas or suggetions for Lilies in Cotainers? Should I tranplsnt into a bigger pot?
I have moved from So. Ca, a house with once acre of a garden every yr. What a change! So I need as much help with container gardening as I can get! Thank you!
