First flower

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

It is mucky from being sprayed but it was there this morning so I got the picture. This one appears to have more blizzard than usual for the first flower. It is purple rayed with blizzard and has a fuschia tinge to the throat.

Thanks all. Today was a good day for us so it looks like the flower was a positive beginning. :)

This is the pollen parent one of the early first blooms.

This is pollen parent later blooms showing increasing ammounts of white as the vine matures.

I`m seeing a more petite vine(like the pod parent and more blizzard markings like the pod parent and a greener leaf and the throat is not as pinkish looking. The pollen parent has contributed a purple color and purple ray pattern.

I did this one to learn what happens just tinkering around in the garden. It is interesting and I`m going to watch and see what pattern this one follows. Imagine that? A designer flower? :)

And the grow outs will be even more telling. The group should include mostly purple and a few pink should show up if I grow enough.

Looks like one of those nebulas the Hubble telescope could have photographed - really like this one

More recent blue looks like spun silk. Love the pod parent too with the
extra petal.
Both very showy.

Do you notice color and pattern variations with temperature changes?

I have selfed seeds growing out of both the parent plants for reference and to reveal more about their genetics. What I`m wanting to do is try and get the full bloom, color and ray pattern of the purple and more attractive and even blizzard patterns and tougher resiliant tear resistant blooms of the pink one. I hope if I plan it right and get enough hand pollinated pods I could do a big grow out of about 30 of them. Each one would have a tiny numbered tag attatched when it is transplanted(so I can keep any possible volunteers weeded out) and then the second tag will go on after it blooms to give it ID. That will take a whole row of my garden and then I`ll have to be out there every single morning to check blooms and mark for ID so I can begin to tie blooms and also cull some of them if necessary.

One thing I noticed about these as far as cold. Cold nights getting down in the 50`s would make the blooms open partialy and some would open but have very wierd color with a lot of pink on a previuosly very blue flower. Different varieties had different reactions to cold. When temperatures are steady 60-75 degree nights with no rain then the flowers look perfect.
