Beth's wire towers..

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Hi there. I looked al over the place for the coated wire that Bindweed used to make her
kool towers. I finally found it at a feed store that caters to Horse enthusiasts. lol

The roll was 2 feet wide x 25 feet long, and the green vinyl coated mesh was 3" x 4", and cost
$15.00, good price in my book.

When I started making the towers, I quickly figured out a recipe. I would hold the end of the roll and shake it down to get to unroll enough to cut some off. I then counted down 10 wires, and took my wire cutters, and cut just under the 10th wire. This makes them about the right size for 2 and 3 gallon pots. Now, because I cut right below and against the 10th wire, that leaves long wires for bending and crimping on the opposite side of the next one you cut.
I found out by experience that if I cut half way between, then when it is time to bind the edges together, , crimp
them, and cut the ring off the end, I will have two wires about an inch apart. This makes it more difficult to get the wire cutter where I need it later on in the process. Cutting just under wire 10, gives you nice long wires on the opposite side, and they are easier to make little hooks on, for binding the edges together, for crimping. Also don't forget to cut the ring of wire off the end so you will have prongs to go down in the potting soil to hold it down

Out of the 25' roll I got 16 towers. That is just about $1 each. Very good Idea Beth, and thanks for sharing that with the rest of us. Now I can get on with transplanting. Frank
