I think I shall never see...

Eau Claire, WI

...a garden as lovely as thee. Is there anything more beautiful than nature's selection & placement of trees, especially conifers along a pristine river? I had just come off an especially difficult meeting up in Duluth yesterday afternoon and was feeling a bit gloomy about it all when I passed by this river. It was the perfect antidote to the stress I was feeling and within a few minutes my spirit was lifted.

This is where the meeting should have been held.

Wow, if there is a better garden, I haven't seen it. Thanks for putting it up!

Those are beautiful photos Bob, looked like a great day too. Who cannot love the Canadian shield country of the upper Lakes region? The landscape has a rugged wild beauty that has been compelling to me all my life. And in the southern part of this area where white pines are so prevalent, one cannot imagine a more beautiful 'sentinel tree' of this landscape. Where were your photos taken?

So are there any signs of spring up there? I don't see any snow at least.......

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I agree - Nature makes a nice garden. I took a hike the other day and marvelled at this Cedars placement.

Maackia,

Nice pictures! I agree, meetings would be much better done in an outdoor setting. I probably would "get lost" getting to it though. I think that the landscaping gets better the farther west one goes.

Just a smidge farther west than the La Sal Mts. in the previous post: Yellowstone.

More Glacier. Uh, ignore this one, please. It's in the wrong colorspace for web viewing. The next one is better.

One last one from my favorite park. Aww, golly. I did it again. Wrong colorspace. Sorry. I need to get some sleep.

I say the St. Louis River through Jay Cooke State Park (just south of Duluth) would REALLY lift your sprits then. Not as contemplative as that smaller river though. Jay Cooke has one of the westernmost populations of Tsuga canadensis (Canada Hemlock), I might add.

Mmm - those lake shots are downright astonishing... wow.

Brought back good memories...nice pics, Ernie.

Yes, Ernie, lovely pictures. I think Steve said in one of his posts that he or someone did not think Going to the Sun hwy would be open to the public this year until late. When my daughter was visiting, a couple of years ago we drove up that hwy. Was beautiful and we took lots of photos. They were working on it then. Glacier Park is great viewing.

Great pictures! What is that spire of a conifer in the forefront of the La Sal Mtns. pic? Looks like getting a closeup might have presented a challenge.

My pics were of the Lester River--just a short distance from the St Louis River Leftwood mentions. Its only about 15 miles long and called Busabika zibi by the Ojibwe, meaning "Rocky Canyon River." It was still getting down into the low 30's last week, so spring is still keeping secrets up there. Gorgeous country though, and Duluth is a much prettier city than given credit for. Minnesota's version of San Francisco?

Presume you mean the one in the Yellowstone Falls pic? That one is Pinus contorta subsp. latifolia.

In more ways than one.

And one thing I noticed as we drove through Duluth, three bars and a detox center on almost every corner!

Well, I have been to Duluth. To Grand Marais, to Ely, and beyond.........There is a forsaken beauty about these nawthun places. They are gateways to to the faw nawth...........

Despite the cold. despite the bugs, the nawth of Minnesota, Michigan, Ontario, there is just something very appealing about these places.............................it is the wildness, I think. The lack of invasives................the lack of people........................yes, Scott, the bars do keep people going. The winters are awfully long, after all.
