What is happening in your garden?

B&D says these bulbs need at least a year to settle in and usually not bloom the first season after planting. http://snowcreek.stores.yahoo.net/l8012.html

So does that mean there will be no growth this year, or growth with no blooms?

you'll have foilage but no blooms.
bulbs root and send their stems and leaves up so they can photosynthesis. thats how they make food.
the bulb size usually coincides with the age of the bulb. that's why most bulb companies sell top size so they'll bloom the spring or summer after planting.
size depends on the bulb cultivar.
I don't know what settled in means other than it needs to grow up

Moby, I remember we bought at the same time last fall....the private harvest Superbums. I checked mine earlier this week and she is just breaking ground. Keep me posted on what yours does. Perhaps because we had super large bulbs for this variety, we might see something, at least that's what I am hoping for.

5 or 6 days ago I planted a large delphinium. It was very windy so I put a bottomless bucket around it.

Yesterday I removed the bucket and was horrified that I had dug so close to this emerging stem. In was inside the bucket ~ Yikes!

I can 'see' you reacting to that stem popping up in your dig zone! That's really digging it close Mary! Luck of the Irish?
