Does anyone know if an Easter Lily can live all year if kept inside?
Easter Lily
Hi Melissa ~ Welcome to DG and the Lily forum!
Yes, a lily can be kept alive, but it won't bloom again without a cold season. They can be planted in the ground and will probably come back next year, as they are hardy here. When bulbs are forced, they don't always come back but I've had success with Easter lilies.
Thank you. Maybe I'll give it a try. From some of the stuff that I have read on the internet some sounded like they would but then some sounded like they would so really didn't know. The one that I have I have only had for maybe a month. I was just looking at it and it looks like it has something coming up from the bottom of it. Guess I will give it a while see what it does.
You see something coming from the soil line? It could be a bulblet putting up new growth or I have heard of Easter lilies that put up another shoot and bloom again.
If you plant your bulbs and the foliage dies back prematurely, don't assume that it's dead. It's just on a different time schedule.
The original plant still looks good but it looks like there might be anouther one coming almost coming out of the very bottom of the stem about at the soil line. I didn't plant this one I got it at one of the stores here. So I guess I will just leave it alone for now and see if I end up with anouther one. Thank you very much for your help. I don't know much about them just thought it was pretty.
You're most welcome. Lilies are pretty easy to grow, just give them sunshine and good drainage. Rabbits love them too, but that's the worst thing I have to contend with.
Too bad you live so far west, we have a few gardeners here around Lincoln that like to get together now and then. There are a couple DGer's out your way.
I could just image the rabbits. Last year we planted a really big garden and it seemed like everytime something got to doing really good they would come in and take it right off. So hopefully it does better this year.
I haven't seen anyone on here from out this way but haven't been on that long so really haven't had much of a chance to look at to much yet.
Highly recommend Plantskydd ~ best deterrant for rabbit and deer so far and available at Earl May if you have one out there. Or there's always the internet or maybe you could ask a nearby nursery or farm supply store to get some in.
If you go to the home page, there is a tab for 'Extras'. At the bottom of the first list you'll see "Find other DG subscribers in your area ". Click on that and you'll get a list.
Might have to give that a try to keep the rabbits out of it. As far as I know we didn't have any deer come up in the yard but I guess they could of in the middle of the night but I think with the corn fields right here they might like those a little bit better alot more in them, then in my garden. Thanks might have to see if I can find it somewhere.
Here's the scoop on Longiflorum. They don't need a cold period to rebloom!
The stems will eventually die down whether in the house or outside. Look for your Easter Lily to put up new stems a few months later (if in the house) and you will have blooms again. Some people who plant their Easter Lilies outside, sometimes see a second flush of blooms the first summer simply because they were forced to bloom in March/April. Normally, in the colder zones, you won't see this second bloom just because there's not enough time for it to happen.
In the house, you're going to be faced with some challenges. Lilies need sunlight to regenerate the bulb. If the plant isn't getting enough sun, you may get a second bloom, but a third is probably iffy. Therefore, if you can provide enough light, the correct moisture and fertilizer, you can keep it year round and you should see at least 2 bloomings per year.
