Daylily_ohio started a thread on Dave's Garden Forum about starting a forum for Hellebores. If anyone is for it, maybe you can go and post your support. It's not getting many responses right now.

They are lovely doss! The one in your first pict. looks very vigorous and generous.
Thanks for the name tillysrat. I'm curious to see the flowers open.

This is one I bought this year;
It's one of the 'Wilgenbroek Selection' Helleborus orientalis 'Dark'.

You are so lucky in Belgium to have a head start on all of the fabulous doubles etc.. that are only beginning to come on the market here bonitin. That color is delicious.

Thanks Doss, They had some real georgeous double in that selection,I almost fell for one ...

This is one from the same collection I had already posted in the perrenial forum. H.orientale 'Picotée'

I have a new Quiestion~ my Hellebore is getting plenty of water, drainage, fertilizer and about 4 hours of sun a day, barely with2 maybe direct on it. Is the lack of sun causing it to grow slow, or are these plants slow by nature in growth? I have a 2 year old plant & it is only putting out is 3rd stem...
any clues?

I think your Hellebores get more than enough sun, Fernman. I have a couple of them that don't get sun at all and they do bloom. They do get some sun after their blooming-time, but that's not very much.
Hellebores are rather slow to grow ....
Are you sure they don't get too much water ? They like it moist but not soaked.
This is one with wavy petals that doesn't get any sun at all and still blooms,
its about 7 years old now

Sometimes it just takes them a little time to take off, especially if they were bought small. Light shouldn't make a difference though. I have some that are willing to grow almost in the dark. Give them another year and see if they take off.

darren, about this time last year i went to a nursery and bought some helliobores. I just had to have them. They were expensive. The nursery workers said they were there the previous year and didn't sell. They all had blooms on them and i planted them. They seem to all disappear in the summer. They have come back but they look like they might want to disappear again. Green leaves, then they start turning brown. I'm wondering now if they are going to bloom or just disappear again.

Heronswood has a nice selection of Hellebores.

Pine Knot Farms (Dick & Judith Tyler) has a great selection of hellebores, plus the book, "Hellebores," Burrell & Tyler. They are near Clarksville, VA. Just Google Pine Knot Farms for more info.

mine fnally put outa 4th stem, still over all about 5 inches total ht., i think it wants lots of water, here anyway, where yours is at, dunnno, I am getting a LOT of sun on min right now, which is ik as it is only getting to Eighty max. Ina months tiem there will be lots more shade Len123, then i will kepp watering and watch...and watch. the heats my worry ~your brown leaves could be a mineral wierdness, did you fertilize recently? Or not?? Maybe treat it, with a '3 in 1 Schultz' spray in case its a bug or fungus on the root?? GOOD luck~ !

fernman, i'm down to 3 of them. I think one has actually bloomed. It is either a dark blue flower or else it's black.lol. I just give up on them i let them do their thing. wet,dry it doesn't matter, they get green and then have part of the leaves that are crispy. Every once in a while leaves pop up and then disappear.

yeah, leaves on mine, i now rememeber some went brown too! so sorry did not remember that before!!! It hink its a soil/fertilizer thing, or sun>? i do fertilize aa lot as the soil here is all amended, it has to be. Happy to hear you have some blooms, the more exotic the clors the better!
take care

careful Fernman. I've heard that the best way you can kill a hellebore is to overwater it.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

i'm beginning to think it is normal. here is the one with the blooms, they are dark. I thought it was more dieback first time i saw it. another that had died and went to heaven is starting to get new leaves again.i just don't get it.lol

Oh you are right Len. The old foliage dies and new foliage comes after the blooms. I have some that are doing that now.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

Well thank you doss very much. I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with them, for a while. They come, then they disappear, then return again. this is the first bloom i have actually seen, other than when i first bought them.

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Just hang in there Len and don't do too much and see if they "spring" back. Some people cut back all of the foliage after a bloom I've heard.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

I haven't done a thing but fertilize once in while. they just come and go.lol.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

If you see any black spots on the stems of the leaves, its best if you removed it.

Len, you photo looks great, makes me think I may see flowers this winter after all!!!
and it looks healthy as mine does except for one leaf~I'd not worry too much, maybe it.s lost some foilage during the flowering as it is small like mine? Anyone?
fernman23

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I would cut that leaf off, Len.

Hells and Pups, go good together, This is the same one I posted before only bigger. And just learning I cut all the old leaves off, because a couple had a black spot on them. now look how nice it looks.
