Do you know the origin of smashing plates at weddings?

very interesting. It is mentioned that modern Greeks no longer toss
plates, as it is dangerous and costly. Instead, they toss flowers.
A commercial came on earlier, leading me to wonder what became
of all the smashed pottery and such. Wonder if they make many mosaics
in Greece and other countries who smash plates?
