Forgot to transplant the poppies when they were little

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I know they don't like root disturbance, but they are outgrowing their container. Can I maybe carefully slice off the bottom and plant them as is? Tamara

Go ahead and transplant your Poppies via the 'hunk of seedling' method. They are hardier than you think.

Cool! Thanks! Now I just have to figure out where I'm going to plant them. ;-) Tamara

Tamara,

i did the HOS method for both of mine. But the bunnies found them tasty and now they are gone... but they did transplant well.

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

What I did was slice off the bottom of the container and then then stuck the whole thing in the ground. It worked! There are a few buds, so hopefully they will start blooming soon. :-) Tamara

Mine bloomed and now are just seedheads. I wasn't that impressed with the particular variety, so I probably won't grow them again. But now that I know that I can grow poppies, I plan to buy some of the peony-flowering poppy seeds. Tamara

I did sow peony types with my poppy mix.Hopefully! a few will be the peony types.Keeping my fingers crossed.

skimper: Wow! Good job! Pretty Poppies and I love that 'eye poppin' color!

Tamara: I think that the seedheads of Poppies are beautiful and I like using them in flower arrangements. If you weren't that happy with a certain variety that you grew this year, simply choose different ones for next year. Poppies come in such a lovely array of colors!

My ws Poppies haven't bloomed yet because I purposely planted them in part sun. Last year when I planted them in full sun, they got 'fried', so I hope I see some blooms this year. It's an experiment to see if they will bloom in part sun, so stay tuned!

Shirley, I had read that comment from you before about frying in the hot sun, so I went ahead and planted mine in partial shade, which is mostly what I have here anyway. They bloom ok, but the more shade they get, the more they are leaning over. Or Is that normal? It's my first year to grow them.

This is a major triumph for me, after having crispy fried poppies last summer! Here are my annual W/S poppies, sorry about the fuzziness, but wanted to show that other buds are coming along. ;0)

very cool!!

i actually had one come back from last year. It bloomed yesterday.

all the ones from this year, the ones i WS'ed, got eaten.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to them returning. TSC, I was told to sprinkle chipotle or cayenne pepper on and around the seedlings to keep the pesky bunnies away. It worked well after Peter Rabbit's thug cousins enjoyed their appetizers... they've yet to return to this portion of the gardens! ;0)

Congratulations garden6!!!

Suzy: In my 7a growing zone, we have hot & humid Summers. All I can tell you is that I've planted my Poppies this year in a partly sunny area. They are healthy and growing well. They haven't bloomed yet, so I'm going to give them some fertilizer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I see some beautiful blooms soon!

Since you garden in a cooler zone, you probably can plant yours in full sun. Best of luck!

I'm getting some purple ones on sale from Parks ...

I just got home from a 10 day RnR up in wisconsin, and low and behold... i have a red poppy growing in my field.
[my guess is that a seed 'blew' over there form last year] I plan to transplant it, maybe in a pot first... so that way i dont completely lose it... i think i saw a shasta daisy too. I'll have to do a bit of digging plants before i can mow... and it really needs it.

but i was very surprised and excited... since my WS seedlings are all gone...

OH another thing that ticked me off, and it's not the bunnies this time.. my JoePye Weed is also COMPLETELY gone!!
From what i can tell, the birds were taking 'dirt baths' right where JPW was... all that is left is indentations where they flapped and rolled around. **shakes fist**
