I just dug up one of my giant white callas and found lots of babies...can I let the bulbs dry out and then plant them again later ? Or should I cut the green leaves off and plant the bulbs right away ? Sorry, Iam lost on these things.
Giant white callas: sorry, more questions !
Can't help you with your question, but if you don't get an answer here, you might try the Bulb forum.
I'd repot them right away as this is the time of year for them to be growing. In the fall, you start withholding water and they will go dormant. You can either leave them as is or dig them up and store in a cool dry place.
okay, thanks to both of you. I did repot them and they did go limp but I will wait and see if they perk up any. I'll give them awhile before cutting the leaves down.
when repot your calla, it help if you could keep them in shade, away from direct sun, mist them too will help them recover. As for the baby bulbs, you can try to pot them separately to nurse them into bigger ones.
Lily, thanks. I've got them in shade but will also try misting them for awhile. I haven't been out to see them yet today so hopefully they are doing okay. If I wanted to send some to someone whoud I just cut the leaves off and let them dry out ?
Good question, I haven't tried this myself, but I don't see why not. Be sure to leave the root intact if there are viable, I'd carefully wrap them in peats. Provide enough packing peanuts in a study boxes to avoid bruishing them during transit. (I wished many mail-order-catalogs would do this, perhaps their rating would be much improved). Have fun gardening.

Thanks Kim, sounds like a good suggestion. Now maybe I could find someone on the trade list who might want a few.
betterbloom, you're quite welcome. You must be new as I'm on the trading things. It seems like fun. I haven't yet done any trading myself.
Lily love: I've only traded a few times, but not the lillys. I'm still trying to fill my yard up with plants so really don't have much to trade. Mostly I have irises but slowly adding other plants here and there. Would you like a couple of these callas ? They grow to about 3 foot and have white blooms. If so just let me know and I will send you a few.
Betterbloom;
That's so nice of you to offer. Thank you, so much. But, I do have the white Calla. I'm running out of room to plant (litterally). I also have a bad case of spring-fever. I've potted plants sitting all over the front yard and back waiting to be planted. lol. Do keep in touch, perhaps, we can trade in the future?
Sounds like a plan to me...good luck with all your spring planting. I think we are in summer here..at least 100 here today.
Ditto, it's was in the 80"s here, but I've serious sun-burn sitting out watching the race! Back to gardening tomorrow. :-)
