New Roo's

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I came home from Mom's today with special cargo! Her neighbor had 3, 13 month old roos that were raised together . They had always gotten along very well, that is until the Girls started laying! One Roo took charge( a Barred Rock) and he didnt give the two brother Buff O's a chance! The neighbor was going to put them in the Pot! But ,You know me, I couldnt let that happen! So now I have two beautiful Buff Orpington Roosters that need a really good Home!!! Old CockleLooLoo just is not going to be happy with his new Pals! Although Mama Bar-rock , is giving them the eye!!!

I love their little pants!

Reminds me of being a kid and wearing snow pants.

Are the roos that plump, or is all that bulk from feathers?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

It looked starved to death and sooo thirsty! We know of No neighbors here raising chickens. Not close anyway!
This little Chick is so tame and shy! It let us pick it up and handle it , not getting the least bit upset! the other Chicks made it welcome and it is getting along fine!!! The only thing is I really think its another Rooster!!!!! Could be we are becoming the community Roo Drop Off!!!! Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshhhhh!!!

Well, if I must confess...................while I was feeding yesterday; I overheard Sally & Corky gossiping (as usual) and they got wind of your first Roo rescue and quickly sent out the long distance S.O.S. to the Leghorn-looking chick!!!! lolololol They knew it would have a great home with Miss E!!!!!!! :0)
The buff O's are gorgeous. Nice, fat, plump ones aren't they??? Looks like they were fed rather well!

I think chickens sometimes just wander off or maybe they fall off of poultry trucks? My mom had a mystery chicken that showed up at her house years ago. She never had any idea where it came from - nobody anywhere near her was raising chickens. She named it Queeny because it had such a regal manner LOL and it lived there until it died. Luckily it found the one yard where it had a new owner who was raised on farm.

Another time a full grown guinea turned up wandering around right up the street from her. It has to have fallen off of a truck. I don't know of anybody in town who was raising guineas.

Oh Lordy, they escaped! The rascals got into it with Cocklelooloo, and boy did they do damage!! Mostly to Pride though! Old CockleLooLoo , has a bloody head but no eye damage , thank heavens! I ran out just in time to pull them apart! ( Who was thinking ..... Not Me!!!) At any rate, I grabbed My big Ole roo, and ran him to the big Pen and turned every one out at put him in! Now Im watching and waiting for dark to see where the BuffO brothers roost so I can catch them and put them into confinement again!!!! Arrrrrrghh!!!! I'll get pics while Im out there! You wont believe the bad looking wounds! But they seem to be okay!!! peroxide and old Blue Spray awayyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Later!

Wow, those naughty boys. I had 2 silkies that would go at it everyday, they have moved on to a new home. I guess it's in there nature to fight, the new roo looks like he lost the battle, but he sure is beautiful.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well every one is fine this AM! New Roo's are in their tiny inclosure, Not very happy though! CockleLooLoo and Mama are out scratching and doing business as usual! It was a scary time last evening but no damage done. Now the work begins finding new homes for the twins!!!
Yep, B., They are Handsome boys!!! Its a shame something so beautiful has to have a hard time finding a home! But Im going to post some adds and probably go to Chicken Auction and Show them off! Im sure someone needs a Healthy Buff Rooster!!!

Eu, the roosters are so good looking.. If I lived closer to you I would take them in for you but I live in Mo..

Eufaula how do you go about finding a new home? Saw you wrote 'put up ads" but how do you make sure they are going to a good home and not a stew pot? Out of my 4 chicks that I got 2-3 weeks ago I am pretty sure that 1 of my americauna's is male even the they were supposed to be pullets. His behaviour (very aware), his feet and stance and all say to me "male" I can not keep a rooster - due to noise and good neighbor relations, so would appreciate any advice.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Tracey, "Little Guy" , Is doing great! But I think he has some problems! For one thing I believe he was mistreated, from where ever he came, He is vey slow and acts as if he is semi-blind! He is very gentle and sweet. He will go up to all the little Chicks and sit next to them. My Chicks were all on the defensive knowing he was a new comer, and would peck at him warning him not to get so close! He would just stand there and not move, very subordinate. He wants friends so will not fight, but willing to subject himself to picking and pecking, until the chicks accept him. They are all doing that now, so he has resumed eating and loves being with the chicks! Oh and he has the biggest feet I have ever seen on a chick!
MQN, Hello,Nice to hear from ya!!! I will be putting an ad in our local papers and make flyers for the action barn and the feed stores!! Ha ha ha, I will be asking a good price for them too! That way if they want a Stewing Rooster, they can go to the grocery store and buy one , for about 4 bucks!!!! I also will ask for cash or trade, I could use a good Silkie Rooster, or maybe a new feeder!!! Never know! I can usually pick out good Chicken People!!!

What a funny story! I just caught up :) I was so obsessed yesterday with my brood I missed the forums totally :)

I love your sweet little white guy! What will you name him? LIttle Guy?

Those are GORGEOUS roos. My buff orpington hen would be mighty pleased if she saw one of them, I bet :) They have a bout the same body type she does. B.O.s are a dual meat and laying breed and she is very large and wide legged, like they are.

Eu, when I had a roo move in for s few days, he just creamed my head hen. Pulled all of her head feathers out ( she wasn't appreciating his advances) and she bled a lot, but was totally fine. They'll all survive. But looks like in the end, there can be only one....!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I thought at first Id call the new little Guy, Chester! ( We have a chester fried chicken joint close by!!! LOL!!! But now I seem to detect a slight push to the right when he walks and a slight tilt to his head! His Name is John Wayne!!!!! He going to be big too, If his feet mean anything!!!!

Robertsville, MO

I'm so glad that little one made it to you because you are an angle sent from above to take care of the speacil little one.

We want feet pictures! LOL I wonder if he could be a cornish rock? Don't they have real big feet and legs?

Monticello, GA

Eufaula,,, I am really surprised that there are not more feral chickens , than there are!
Someone closer than me ,got a few this spring. And your vagabond is responding to your roosters crowing,, that is my story ,and I'm sticking to it.

But seriously,,,, I do some of my best pillow drooling sleep between 4:00AM & 8:00AM!
I don't think I could handle a roo disturbing that.
I think it is great that you take in and care for these unwanted or lost birds.
Just so glad you don't have a cat.

Your barred rock roo is king, I have seen him. he's a rock!

Monticello, GA

It looks to me that the BO got the worst of that fight!
Has cocka loo-loo still got vision in both eyes?Looks like Evander after first Tyson fight!

Antrim, NH

don't worry TB, you quickly learn to block out the CONSTANT crowing :)

It's possible he's a cornish x. He does look like what my next door neighbor has.

love the name,

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

If chickens were bred to survive on their own, I'm sure there would be tons of feral ones. Alas, they're easy pickins.

I really wish roosters were easier to find homes for, but when you think about it, here's an animal that basically wants a group of hens all to himself, is miserable living alone, and is often more willing to fight than is necessary. I admire roosters -- they're so beautiful and brave and gallant -- but they are tough to place. I can't just advertise "free rooster"... I'm afraid some jerk will want him for cock fighting.

No wonder they get eaten more.

Robertsville, MO

He is a red sex link because mine is the same thing I called the
Farmer store and asked...He is not a cornish hen...
Tracey

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Okay here I am, Ive been so busy trying to figure out who needs to be where in the yard , that I didnt have enough time to get back to you all! Nowwwwww!!!
Lets see , going back to where Little John Wayne , could have come from!!! Well we do have a Chicken or Egg Farm about 3 miles from here..... Could be J.W. fell off one of the Chick trucks( Could explain why he is definitely a Special needs Child)! I think he is probably one of the Young Roosters that they had to get rid of , and he escaped !!!!
Tracey, I wouldnt call myself an Angel but I sure do seem to get all the throw aways here , including all the stray dogs and cats!!! I just find homes for all of them!!!
Now if you want FEET pictures, This little man has them!!!!
Just look , His feet are already as big as the grown Chickens!

Just had to respond, Eufaula gosh you just always brighten my day, the imagery of John Wayne left a smile on my face all day long yesterday. And you can truly read minds your captions fit the pictures perfectly.

Re: Feral chickens - I went to pick up film and plates (work for a print company) at Royce's right here in the middle of Salt Lake City and what did my wondering eyes did perceive? You guessed it - a black free ranging chicken - the people there said that it had been there for years & they had no idea where it came from - "city folk" yes I am one of them but sheesh - there is a Intermountain Farm Association store a block and half away (on the road you have to drive on to get to their location) thinking he/she must have escaped not sure of sex but they had not noticed any crowing so I will give them the benefit of the doubt on that.

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

Funny! Must be a really smart bird. Street-smart, I mean. :)

Monticello, GA

GEEZ!!! What feet? No problem of him falling over. I gotta come see this mythical character,,(John Wayne) DANG! That is incredible! Has he got spurs yet?
Eufaula, I'm gonna come see this bigfoot chicken,,,also want to see the nurses pen you have for cock-a-loo-loo and the boss buff.

Monticello, GA

I saw a thing on PBS ,,,I think, a few months ago. It was about feral chickens in Florida , I think one of those upperscale places down there. The residents in this neigborhood were being awakened every morn by these bands of feral cocks and their ladies...Roosting outside million dollar homes and pretty much driving the local people crazy. They called in a specialist to remove the bothersome rooster...tied up a judas cock and waited,,,it did not work,,they were unable to catch the rowdy roo... But he did woooooop up on the judas roo,,,he got his butt whipped and played dead to stop the onslaught!

Did anyone else catch that on the tube???

Pretty funny really.

Antrim, NH

well now that you mention it, there are oooooodles of feral chickens on Grand Cayman, where the DH and I honeymooned ( and he thought he was escaping chickens for a week, LOL!) because there are no winters to kill them off.

My coworker from Hawaii says feral chickens are a huge problem there ( same deal) They escape during big storms and hurricanes and such and they attack crops and make a nuisance of themselves :)

I think it would be fabulous to have wild chickens, but then again, it would probably not be as fun as I am imagining....myself as St. Francis of Asissi.... St. Maryanne of a chicki....
