Hi,
I planted several single bulbs last Fall that have decided to put up more than one stem. These were not very big bulbs either. Some are Asiatic and LA lilies. Just wondering if this is common? I don't really recall any of them splitting into more than one bulb, but maybe that is all it is...

Multiple stems
I sometimes think they multiply over the winter. I know that I planted 3 LA Samur last fall and there are 5 now. What a great deal, huh? At first I thought my memory was failing, but then I began journaling last fall, and indeed, I planted just 3 and now there are 5. I am not sure whether they are double nosed or new bulbs. Hmmmmmmmm.
Just goes to show, they never go dormant.
I planted one Ruth and Hugh Cocker bulb last Nov. and I have 3 stems! I have another bulb that I planted at the same time and is reproducing like a weed. It put up 7 young lings and one main stem http://www.lilynook.mb.ca/images/Asiatics/Marribelle.jpg , and I don't know if I like the color! Fall planting definitively seems to have advantages.
Would be interested to know which Cocker cultivar that was, Andrew. Next time I see Ruth and Hugh, I'll try to remember to mention it to them.
I bought it under the name "Eric". I guess for an asiatic it was medium size. I don't recall any obvious splits, but that is from memory.
Hey, Andrew. I bought Eric from Maniac's auction last fall and I think I have either 3 or 4 stems now. I only planted one. So your memory is not failing you.
You know, I don't even think I kept one for myself. Hint, hint, hint. Anyone? Someone?
Oh Maniac, you can have one this fall. You didn't keep one for yourself? You crazy?? ;)
Remember, I had gotten a layoff notice last fall. (But it all worked out.)
I have one large pot of some random orange asiatics that I planted about 3 years ago. I only had 6 bulbs at that time, right now there are about 15 stems that are about a foot high right now. I have a smaller pot near the door that I planted some other generic lilies in and I never saw one flower last year, but this year, tons of seedlings crammed in there, each one with 1 single bud at the very top of the stem. Always a surprise:)
