I thought I read on a seed packet years ago that Salvia seeds aren't viable for very long. Does anyone know for sure how long they're good for? I'm limited for seed starting space and will toss them if they're no longer viable. (even though I'd like to grow some for this year)
Thanks!
Sandy
Viability of Salvia (scarlet sage) Seeds?
I don't know either. I have some in the freezer, so I'd like to know if they are good, also. Thanks for asking. Karen S
Sprouting 10 seeds on a coffee filter would give you a good idea.
(I've had very bad "luck" starting salvia seed indoors, but I'm still learning how.)
My "luck" starting salvia in trays is very much improved. I use a faster-draining mix that has a lot of pine bark fines in it, some perlite and grit, and less peat powder.
I try to do less over-watering.
Many Salvia varieties sprouted 50%-75% for me.
Others at much lower rates, but that might be age of seed. Most of my varieties were traded, I don't know how old.
This is my first spring getting ANY live ones into the ground, now let's see if they flower the first year. We had a late, cold spring.
Corey
Hi Corey, I was curious as to whether or not you see any flowers on your Salvia yet? Maybe it's way too early for that?
I still need to respond to your D-mail! Don't worry, I haven't totally forgotten! Seed collecting keeps getting in the way!
