What arrowwood should I plant with my "blue muffin"?

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

I planted a 'Blue Muffin' arrowwod viburnum last year and I'd like to plant another arrowwood with a similar bloom time. The local garden center carries 'Morton', 'Chicago Lustre' and 'Ralph Senior'. Any recommendations? Thanks, Peg

If those are the only two Viburnum dentatum that you will consider (and my heart weeps for those who so limit their potential enjoyment of all that life can offer), Chicago Lustre® is your best bet.

All accounts (worth their viburnum salt) consider Blue Muffin™ an early bloomer in the arrowwood cycle. 'Ralph Senior' (Autumn Jazz®) and 'Morton' (Northern Burgundy®) are late in the arrowwood bloom cycle and likely wouldn't overlap in bloom time.

If you could see yourself breaking the viburnum mold in MN...consider some of the great introductions from Beaver Creek Nursery or Johnson's Nursery. All of these are in the early blooming group and will overlap with Blue Muffin™.

Viburnum dentatum Red Feather™
Viburnum dentatum Cardinal™
Viburnum dentatum Crimson Tide™
Viburnum dentatum Indian Summer™
Viburnum dentatum Little Joe™
Viburnum dentatum Red Regal™

Except for Little Joe™ (which I haven't had long enough to give a full evaluation) all these have exceptionally decent fall color. Those you've listed don't go much beyond washed out yellows with a scattering of orange and red (for me in KY, and a belated member from northern IL).

Nothing like a little transposed viburnum guilt...

Thanks! Through the magic of the internet, I believe I've found a place nearby that carries Red Feather. This time of year, I don't like to think about fall color, but I still think that's quite a pretty picture you've posted.

I do have another corner of the yard where I think I'll put in one more viburnum, probably a Viburnum rafinesquianum as a nod to local native plants. Also, I like the name.

I planted a 'Red Feather' today - the emerging leaves are really cool looking. Thanks again. Peg
