Show us your Daffodils ll...Who still has blooms?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Our discussion and pics in Part 1 was getting pretty long.

Some of the mid/late beauties are blooming now in my garden. They seem to be the most fragrant of the bunch, I love them for cutting. This is 'Falconet'.

A real cutie! Are those 'falconets' in the background, too?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes, I kind of staggered the planting through that part of the bed. Those sweet little 1 1/2"blooms are an interesting repetition of color while being a dramatic contrast in size with these big 'ol 'Fortissimo'. The orange of the cup is such a deep, strong color, I love it!

The "pinks" are really starting to captivate me. This is 'Jubilee', which I don't see offered very often. These came from Dutch Gardens a few years ago. This is a good representation of the color, and is particularly nice because there is no waiting for the cup to turn from yellow to pink; it opens that color.

Pink would be good. These 'Avalanche' aka Seventeen Sisters are still coming up. Fifteen on a stem is the most flowers I've counted so far. They are very fragrant.

Fortissimo is well named isn't it Neal! Good to hear the pinks are pink!

claypa, such sweet Avalanche, much smaller than I had thought by pics I've seen. Now I wish I had put some on my order!

This is Barbie Doll, a gift and swap from a friend, thanks K!

Dea, love your late double from VE. I have that one too and wish I knew the name...any idea at all?

Gem-- I will try Fortissimo with Falconets. I think it would be a fun play on scale (if they will bloom together for me, that is.)

I haven't been posting over here this year. But my bulbs are finally blooming so I'm here. :-)

Here's a new bed I dug in last fall. (The top part where the daffodils are.) I put the tulips in
the fall of '05. Slowly but surely I'm gonna beat back the nastly multiflora rose and make
this rocky hillside a showy entrance to my home.

Hi, Tammy, I've missed you! With so many forums I am having a bit of a challenge keeping up with some of my favorite gardeners!

Your hillside is really coming along and I love your dash of daffodils on it. Can't make out the orangey-red but I suppose tulips? t.

somewhere, PA

yep - tulip flair. That new area is chock full of bulbs. Iris reticulata & crocus show is over.
I've got allium & Hyacynthoides hispanica next and then asiatic lilies (pixie type) to follow.
I didn't get my camera out soon enough but I'll be sure to get the rest documented properly. LOL

Thanks & great to see so many familiar "faces" here!

Here's another hillside, this one grassy planted with daffodils. There
are muscari & buttercup that bloom amongst the grass so I added the
daffs last fall. (The skunks, squirrels & other critters ate the tulips I tried
the years before).

Avalanche is darling! Another heirloom I must have.

Barbie Doll is gorgeous!

Dea, your Passionales have colored up beautifully; those 80 degree days when mine were blooming just bleached them out.

Tammy, good to hear from you! Your hillside is progressing wonderfully! The bulbs must love that sharp draining hill; they look like they've multiplied a lot.

tabasco, My Falconet and Fortissimo were planted at the same time last fall, so I would think the chances are pretty good they would bloom together. The tazettas do tend to come along a bit later, but I think they would catch up. I think I'm going to use them with Jetfire and LaBelle to make sure some cross bloom times. I'll have to try a couple of the bright yellow/orange ones from Grant Mitsch this fall, those look really exciting!

Keep 'em comin' folks!

What beautiful Daffs. I have quite a few daffs but never kept track of the names and now couldn't tell you what I have. I'll post a few picks and we can play name that Daff.

I really like this orange beauty. I've had it for years and it comes up every year just hasn't spread much I'm thinking of moving it. Any ideas on an ID

Rip van Winkle is blooming for me! :-)

I *adore* this cheerful, wild-headed mini.

Here it is with Hyacinth 'Woodstock', A. blanda 'Blue Shades', and hmmm... maybe those lighter blue stars are Chinodoxa?

I need to get some close-ups... but I'm happy to report that the new 'Ice Follies' daffs bloomed together with the last of the yellow jonquils in this bed, and I'm hoping that next year they will bloom together well (first year bulbs always seem to come up a bit late in my garden). They also look lovely around the flowering pear tree in my front bed, and the 'Geranium' daffs are budding up and starting to open between them just as the blooms on 'Ice Follies' are fading... perfect! :-)

What a pretty bed Critter. I saw a picture of Daffs growing through a bed of forget me nots It was very pretty all the yellows and blues.I may have to try that. Here is a shot of some unopened daffs almost ready. These are small daffs with about 4 flower heads per stem. One of my favorites. OK I guess that they are all one of my favorites.

Heres a shot of the open flowers.

Last but not least I have a lot of these. They have really expanded over the years. They were supposed to be pink but they are more of an apricot. For some reason I keep thinking they might have been called Easter Bonnet, but I'm not really sure.
I guess I will be sitting down with a few bulb catalogs and trying to name them. Dea,These look a lot like your Passionalle from Van Engelen, I think?

Thumbnail by HollyAnnS
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks... that bed is fun because there's something for every part of the spring season in it now... crocus and iris reticulata, then the early daffs (Neal's little yellow daffs, 'Minnow', 'Ice Follies', and the "Yellow Jonquils for naturalizing" from Brecks), then the late daffs ('Yellow Cheerfulness' in back, 'Geranium' in front, separated by a "river" of Muscari latifolium)... and when all that starts to fade, the daylilies take over!

I have a lot of favorites too.... :-) Holly, your display of different daffs is lovely! I like the photo with the fence... reminds me of how cute I thought this clump was (un-named from a mix) next to the weathered bench by my front walk... Of course, being the first to bloom made it a favorite also!

Thumbnail by critterologist
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I did get a somewhat closer morning photo of the yellow jonquils in that daff & DL bed... I've been having a hard time getting good daff pics this year; I think I keep going out with the camera when the sun is too bright and the saturation and definition just gets all washed out...

Thumbnail by critterologist
Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Very pretty critter, I've had several pic like that where all you seem to get is a white blob. I've taken and retaken pic of some of my daffs several times. My daffs are pretty much planted in clumps scattered around the yard. When I first got them years ago I would plant them in groups of 3 or 5. Over the years some have multiplied greatly and others just still have just a few in their groups. Here is a bright spot near the back deck.

Critterologist, I've been having the same luck with daff close-ups. Here is my best shot so far ;p which as you can see needs work. HollyAnn, those daffs are just gorgeous, hope mine come up even half as lush looking!

Hy, are you using your macro setting and then letting the camera auto-focus? It looks like that might be the case, and that the camera is focusing more sharply on the leaves than on the bloom... If you put your camera on its highest resolution setting and take a picture (not on macro) from further back, you can then crop the image to enlarge the bloom and avoid the auto-blurr effect.

I've also been playing with the contrast settings to make the photo less bright plus a little more contrast, and that helps a bit also... Some of my photos would be really awful if it weren't for the magic of digital photo editing!

I will be adding if I can find them 'Falconet', and 'Barbie Doll'. I have on order already
'Actaea-Poeticus', 'Carlton', 'Ice Follies', 'Petit Four', 'Replete', 'Curly Lace', Extravaganza', 'Romy', ' Geranium ' ,' Irene Copeland ', 'Mary Copeland', 'Van Sion' for the fall. But I hope to see more gems here. I trust the pictures so much more than many of the catalogs. Keep the pictures coming! Patti

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks for the advice Critterologist! I will try that :) yup, macro with autofocus was exactly what I was doing wrong. This was one I took today, between storms, using the old method- it's focused on the flower, but then the leaves are out of focus, so I'm very happy there is a better solution!
It's a mini from Van Engelen's Narcissus Miniature Mixture, not sure, but think it's Narcissus Little Gem- only 5" tall, that's why it's so mud splattered

What a cutie! I've got a few clumps of 'Tete a Tete' by my front walk that were just adorable last week.... they got a little muddy too!

Some really interesting daff bloom combinations! Since ours are all finished more or less for the season, it's good to know that you all are just starting out! Pls. keep posting your pics.

I just got my Brent & Becky's paper catalog today. Many new listings in it. And some nice ideas for bulb combinations.

And thanks for the good tips on bloom photography, critter. And I can't resist listing this photo workshop for those who are into learning to photograph blooms ! http://www.betterphoto.com/photocourses/_cws/JM07a.asp

Wish I could take the workshop!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Aaaahhhh, so many beauties!

critter, LOVE your combos, and RVW look like little starbursts!

HollyAnn, so many pretties, and I particularly like 'Easter Bonnet', which I think is correct, as it looks just like the catalog pics, if not prettier!

I finally got a yellow/pink bicolor! My 'Lorikeet' was a mislabeled disappointment, but 'Billy Graham' has turned out to be all I had hoped. The cup is a bit pinker than the pic shows.
