it's looking great grams!
Patti - I love your yard too...so peaceful.
New garden projects and retirement :0)
grampapa, I would plant those peony now. The most important thing is to plant them at the correct depth. The eyes should be planted 2" below the surface. Make sure the soil is firm underneath the crown so in does not settle. Too deep or shallow will result in no blooms, but if you fail to get blooms next year, just correct the depth. The best time to plant them is in the fall, but I have planted and moved them in the spring without a problem. Enjoy. Here is a picture of that shrub I now love last Sept. Patti
Patti, I'm beginning to think I need to just scale down your garden and plant everything you have. that's just beautiful! with the yellow and/or white to set it off...and just the right size for my new bed. I see there is also a dwarf that gets about 3'
also, thanks for the advice on the peonies..I can probably plant today.
jan
I think you would be less thrilled if you saw it in person. The garden always has some troubled spots. Like life. It you look for the Lespedeza , make sure you get 'Gibraltar' or 'Spring Grove' or 'Avalanche' or any named variety. It should be inexpensive 8-12 bucks. Mine was not higher than 4' ( the white flower in the picture is a gladiolus, 'June' at about 52") and it blooms on new wood so it gets cut to the ground each year. I have one called Lespedeza bi-color 'Yakushima' on order for 7.99. I haven't seen it in person. It is damp and foggy today, so my FM is keeping me from doing anything energetic today, well so far. I have a bunch of entry to do in my journal so I may have clean hands all day. What peony are you planting? I still have two tiny ones coming this week 'Lady Alexander Duff' and 'Primavera' ,so I will have to be patient. Patti
Patti, What is the name of that purplr flowering shrub? Is it Lespedeza?
Gram, my SIL was over today for my son's birthday. She asked about you.
Dave47, I hope you told no stories. It is Lespedeza 'Gibraltar' taken Mid Sept. Patti
Thanks Patti. I like it!
WOW!!
Isn't that beautiful!
I ordered some this year.
Congrats Gram on your retirement!
Just scanning all these posts did it say it was your b-day too???
Well..happy B-day if that's the case.
Patti, the peonies are Sarah Bernhardt, a double pink (heirloom variety, over 100 yrs old). I looked for the Lespedeza, saw it for around $10. Looks like a bargain to me. I have to show it to DH.
Dave, I've been meaning to e-mail your SIL. I got a book she recommended and it's great!
jen, thanks. yes, my b'day was Sat and I'm getting older by the minute LOL. The new gardens were a b'day gift from DH. How sweet is that?
Gram, I got mine from a perennial grower who has a farm a mile down the road from me. We worked as waitresses together back in the early 70's so we are old friends. I always ask her about what is her new loves and she recommended it highly to me. It didn't have much appeal at the time, but she basically insisted that I buy it. I have Sarah Bernhardt at my Vt house which I moved from here years ago. I think I will get another as I often miss its bloom and it is lovely. I have a new bed which will be perfect for it. Thanks, Patti
Gram, Happy Birthday and congrats on going into retirement mode. I spent some time in Mexico and look how much I missed. You will have so much time to devote to all the things that bring you joy. Have fun!!
venu, thanks! things are definitely going my way. I was out in the sun today watering roses. I can used to this :0))
Did you have a good time in Mexico?
muy bien!! mucho bonito....better stick to english...it was perfect!
Gram, My son's birthday was Sunday. You are 1 day older.
So, Dave, if I was born 1 day later you could have been my dad. Cool!
You sound like your retirement and your new birth year are off to great starts. I couldn't be happier!
Any gardening gift is a real treat. I'm still trying to decide what I want for Mother's Day.
SInce I have a 4 yr old and a 8 month old my hubby has to get it, I keep changing my mind, first I wanted a gift certif. to a local garden center, then I wanted him to build me a potting shed, maybe some house plants....decisions, decisions
Jen, Anyone with a 4 yr. old & an 8 month old deserves a couple of Mother's day gifts anyway!
HaHa Thanks Dave, tell my hubby that!
So I'm just so far behind I just speed read looking for my name ;)
Happy retirement Jan!
thanks, Al. Now I'll have time to dig up those dahlias in the fall LOL
