I had 2 packets of MG seeds from last year. I planted them, they're doing great. I was thinking about planting them on my chain link fence. One of my friends said it will be hard to take them down come winter. My hairdresser has them on her wooden fence and loves them since they reseed themselves. Is my freind right or my hairdresser? Oh by the way, I have them planted inside right now. Can I just leave them on the ground for a ground cover? I have a flat spot where taking them out wouldn't be a problem.
pros & cons
Hi tammynn from a personal point of view if you like something it's not a problem to do some extra work if need be!! LOL☺ but if you can get the vines down before winter while they are still green they will pull of much easier. I have left mine on my lattice and it can be a pain to get off the dry vines.
As far as ground cover I would say no, as most of them have a natural tendency to climb. There are a few convolvulus that can be used a ground cover and one year I did sweet potato vine and it literally took over, never again!!
I don't have a problem taking mine down, but I do it right after the first freeze when the vines are still green and pliable.
i take them down after they die off. they come right off and whats hits the ground is easy to rake.
not a problem here and all mine go on my fence.
It depends on if you are a neat freak or not. I like natural ruggedness here and there so a bit of dead vine in the right places doesn`t bother me. I would be sure to remove any large twining pieces that could disfigure or cause trouble later with the fence as soon as the vines are done as stated before they become dry and tough. It is work to remove the spent vines especially from chain link because of all the places the vine can wind round and round but I consider the reward of the flowers worth the labor of their maintenance, care and clean up once they have made pods and completed their life cycle.

Thank you everyone. I have a short wall made out of stacked railroad ties. Would morning glories climb up that? You may have guessed, I'm new to morning glories. Thanks again for the help. Tammy
