You're very welcome!
I bought "September Beauty" at Carroll Gardens Nursery, which is in MD, but I bought it on-line. Carroll Gardens offers 6 different types of Clethra. Take a look!

Fragrant plants for shade
Thanks Shirley! I'll look now! I hope they're not too heat sensitive. I tried Astilbes this year, in SHADE and they fryed!
You're welcome, Rob!
Are you talking about moist or dry shade? Astilbes love moist shade. My Clethra is in dry shade, unless I water it. In my growing area, our Summer time heat index can be in the 90's with high humidity. It's been thriving in my garden for the past 10 years.
Yes, they were in moist shade...they probably got one hour or so of sun a day and fried! It doesnt rain here in the summer, but I have automatic irrigation, so watering wouldn't be a problem....
Did you add some polymer crystals to the planting hole of your Astilbes? That should also help with moisture retention.
No I didn't....sounds like a very good idea!
I tend to add a few (doesn't take many) polymer crystals in all my planting holes.....just in case!
That would be a great solution for me. We get 4 inches of rain per year!!!
Wow, I didn't realize that you receive such a little amount of rainfall. Definitely adding polymer crystals to the planting holes in addition to your automatic sprinkler system, hopefully will help to keep your plants alive!
Haven't read this entire thread, but other fragrant annuals are Heliotrope and stocks, but they need sun most of the day.
