African Ipomoea sp ID please

Chatenay, France

Hi !

Can anyone ID this African caudiciform Ipomoea sp ?

I haven't planted it yet and it's already blooming ! (the flower is 5cm in diameter)
If only all Ipomoea species could be as strong as this one !

Thanks,
Henri

Henri - After the plant produces some foliage I might be able to help out...many of the African caudiciforms produce very similar flowers and in these cases the foliage is helpful as well as closeups of the sepals...

My Ipomoea bolusiana has reddish shoots coming out of it, just like yours in the photo. We can compare later when we get foliage. Do you have any foliage shots from last year?

Chatenay, France

I got it recently, we'll have to wait to see the foliage ! And it grows slowly...surely because it hasn't any roots yet, all its energy is coming from the caudex's reserves.
I'll post photos of my Ipomoea Bolusiana that already has small shoots, I'll take the photos later this evening or tomorrow if I come back too late from town.

Offhand I'd say it looks like I. bolusiana or I. holubii....but after it roots and has foliage we can better tell.

Very beautiful and healthy ! I can tell by the way its caudex looks like an over-inflated balloon ! What soil mix do you use for it ?

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

The soil mix is pretty light and well drained. Lots of perlite, sand and some coconut fiber.

Hey Henri - Thanks for the closeups ...they will come in handy at some point...my impression at this point is that your plant is not the same species as Beths...your plant is putting out flowers immediately and seems to be waiting to produce foliage later on...while Beths in comparison seems more interested in foliage first and flowers later...the stems look different to me...

We'll see how they both continue to produce...

Henri, thanks for the photos of such an intriguing plant. I am definitely interested in caudiciforms now I just which someone here would publish a list of the caudex MGS on our forum, or link me to the one that has already been posted. Frank
