can't type when I get excited-I'll just leave it outside this summer and bring it in the GH this winter (maybe try a small piece just to try still...)

The plant I saw had not been cared for in many years, if ever. I wonder what it would look like if it had a bit of fertilizer.

A lot of plants don't really need fertilizer in fact I know my MG's and grape vines flower and fruit less if fertilized. Some plants need stress to flower well. I noticed this year my Magnolias are flowering like crazy and so are the others in the neigbhorhood. I think this has been a stressful spring for them.
Just a thought.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ardesia, how far away from the water (the beach or marsh) is that and what type of surrounding environment is it in?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

The building is a Marina store and the BOP is on the land side. It is a couple hundred yards off the river. The exposure is southeast.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh well im about 1/4 of a mile SE from the beginning of the okatie river and near (approx 20 yards) some wetlands. do you think one could get like that on a western exposure if its in a 10' gap between the house and a large Wax Myrtle hedge? if not, how about an ESE exposure near te back of a gas fireplace and a dryer vent, and a wax myrtle hedge that will be big one day?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Wouldn't know for sure but judging by the one in my neighborhood it is certainly worth a try.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Diehard, as a retired career counselor I sincerely hope you are considering a career in the hort industry.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Yes of course i am. I'm trying to get a summer job @ a nursery, in fact today im gonna turn in my application. then HOPEFULLY, once i get out of High School (i'm only a freshman), I'll go to Clemson or UGA or some school like that and study horticulture and landscape architecture. in 7-8 grade i designed installed and maintained my grandparents yard until i moved. i have designed at least half of my yard here, while my dad did the rest.

DebinSC, the only way that i can think for you to possibly get your's to bloom is plant it close, but not TOO close to the house or in some protected area that recieves heat in the winter from some source like the back of a firelace or a dryer vent. of course in zone 8, youll have to protect it with a blanket and a small heater on very cold nights and maybe wrapping it up. i would protect it every night that it gets below 25*F. this hopefully should get it comfortable enough to bloom good luck

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well keep us filled in on your activities. :-))))

We desperatly need more trained horticulturists in this area.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well i would be glad to fill the position... in like 7 or 8 years once i get out of college if i get in!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I would go to Clemson if I was you.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

What do you mean "if I get in"? Sorry kiddo, you will now have a whole slew of parental types encouraging (bugging) you to study hard. :-)))))

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well Clemson has been raising their standards for SAT scores and thats even after they changed it a year or two ago... even for children of alumni it is getting pretty tough. this year has been so easy as far as grades go. overall averages are A's and only a few weeks til summer. after going to the wonderful schools in Lexington county School district one, this school here (Bluffton High) is a piece of cake. No studying at all this year... except right b4 the test in class }>:-) bluffton was supposed to be the best school in the area. its only 1/2 the size of my middle school, about 1500 vs. almost 3000, and way easier. my middle school was the largest in the state until it split right after i left this year. i went to Lexington middle. BUT anyway if God wants me to get in, I will, and if he doesnt want me to, i wont because he has something greater in store for me that couldnt happen if i went. all things work together for good.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Best public school? You do know Bluffton High is brand new? I think last year was their first year, before that all of Bluffton went to Hilton Head high. I voted for the new schools back a few years ago. 110 million in new schools. You don't realize this but there was almost nothing along 278 10 years ago. Maybe a little longer than that, I'm not sure. 278 use to end at Sun City but Sun City wasn't there. Where you live was just a cheap golf course out in the middle of no where. I said years ago I would as soon die as move to Bluffton, it was just a bunch of hillbillies. Now I live in unincorporated Beaufort county, I still don't want to know as a Bluffton person. LOL.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah ive been coming down since i was 6 but i dont remember that much. i meant the best public school that was near my dad's job that we could get a house in the correct zone for. Now maybe ill go to HHCA next year. my mom teaches there. Maybe it is just culture shock from moving from "rednexington" as we were called by other schools (not necessarily a bad thing) where the schools were 90% white 7% black and 3% other to 30% white 30% black 30%mexican and 10% other. IDK but i wish i had moved to B-town before it became a harlot-house with people getting pregnant after youth group and things like that (behavior seen in school). when it was full of rednecks like my old town was.

PS school percentages are approximate
