Unknown,festival&university seeds possible mutants

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone. Well I found some time to get some pictures done. I got all my university seeds, unkown and university samples started. Here are a few pictures.

These are all unknown. I really like these. I think they are very cool and possibly mutants of some sort.

A close up of one with long skinny leaves.

Another triangle shaped one from festival sample. It curls around the edges.

This pot is marked festival sample. I don`t think all of them are possible mutants. Those two little ones look familiar to me.

You will have some gems before too long!

Nice crop! I always think the anticipation of the unknown is half the fun!

You're narrow leaved plant here http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3402083 is a maple-willow mutant! I have a couple growing this year as well!

Here is a picture from Kyushu University website showing a typical plant and flower. This picture shows a plant with the duplicate gene also, which increases the narrow segments of the "dianthus" like flower.

Wow,I`m almost speechess. What a surprise! The seeds could not reveal how special they were until they were planted and allowed to grow. How neat. Thaks Arlan for making my day. :)

I`m looking forward to watching these.

The narrow leaves look like the ones that Ipomoea aquatica has...but they call it a "bamboo" leaf.

I started the aquatica two days ago. I`ll compare to be sure I didn`t get my seeds mixed up. Time will tell.

The cotyledons shown in the picture are very typical of plants with the maple-willow gene. Of course, the proof will be in the flower! If the plant does not also have a pair of recessive duplicate genes, the flower could look more like this one. - Arlan

I`ll be very pleased if it comes out like that too. That is very beautiful and something to look forward to. :)

I`m guessing the color for fun. I think they might be white flowers. I`ll update to see if I guessed right.

Arlan,

That JMG is the coolest looking flower WOW! It does look like a bizarro Dianthus flower.

Joseph,

I agree, they are pretty cool looking. I'm looking forward to my first flowers this year. I've got plants from three different maple-willow systems started. Neither of the pictures I posted above are mine; they are from the Kyushu University website. Hopefully in a month or two I'll have some pictures to share.

Karen,

The yellow leaved plant with the curled leaves is similar to plants that are involved in these mutant systems. They often are plants that carry the recessive mutant genes, but as single copies, and therefore don't display the mutant traits. They can have fertile flowers, so their selfed seed can produce plants with the mutant traits.....

Thanks Arlan, I`ll update this thread later as the plants grow. I look forward to more mutant plants appearing here. This is the most big fun. It is like rolling dice and seeing what you get. They say gambling is addicting. I`d better be careful. :)

I think this would be a better thread to add my updated pictures. I`ll take more later on.

This one is getting big. The one oward the left has lipping all the way around the leaf and an interesting texture the camera doesn`t represent in this light. I will experiment with the camera later to try and get closer pictures showing more texture. I need an overcast day that isn`t pouring rain to get some better pictures.

Karen,

Very cool leaves! Your trellises will be really covered with vines if all those seedlings take hold and grow out. What a display of color it will be.

I can`t wait! I`m going out to take care of things. I`ll be back later on. Karen
