Wedding Bells MG seeds germination

Greenwich, OH

I have nicked and soaked the wedding bells M.Glory and it has been over a week.
the seeds haven"t germinated yet.I checked the seeds, they look swelled,no germination?
has anyone experience this with wedding bells m.glory seeds?I have not had any problems with my other MG seeds. Thanks!

Plant the seeds in a potting soil where it is relatively warm and wait a few weeks...these seeds don't always want to be 'jump started'...if the seeds don't germinate 'immediately' it doesn't mean the seeds are necessaerilly 'bad',but the seeds may require a slower start...

The seeds have various survival mechanisms in them that insure survival of the species and delayed sprouting is one of the long term survival strategies that is often 'too inconvenient' for gardeners who want instant results...and this can result in seeds being labeled as 'bad' when the seeds may need a longer germination period...

Sometimes seeds can be very sensitive to magnetic fluctuations in the earths magnetic field and starting the seeds at a different time can yield different results...think about potatos and onoins stored in the dark all winter, but they still somehow know to sprout when Springtime is near...it's usually a good idea not to start all(!) of your seeds at the same time...because different timing can yield different results...

I've had Ipomoea tricolor seeds remain viable after 10 years of non-specific storage...

Have any phases of the lunar cycle ever been known to make a difference in any MG germination? just wondering

(Zone 7a)

skimper, I'm sorry, but I can't resist: what mood were you in when you sowed the seed? (kidding)

I ordered some wedding bells from Cynda and low and behold they are peeking out of the soil in three days.

Greenwich, OH

I guess! I have Morning Glory fever.LOL.I have alot of MG seedlings indoors under grow lights.I wonder what the neighbors think about the place being lit up in the evening.I will plant the MG outdoors toward the end of May.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

bluespiral-Karen - offhand I don't recall specifically hoe MG seeds respond to the lunar cycles, but generally seeds have a higher germination rate at the first and full moon because the moon at these phases creates more moisture at the surface of the soil...but how the seeds may react at different phases of the moon when provided with maximum water remains to be elucidated...some claim that plants grow faster because the moons gravitational field pulls the sap upward...maybe...(?!)

There are other postulated factors like the amount of solar radiation and solar wind that is reflected off of the moon relative to the different lunar phases...
I read the book entitled "Cosmic Clocks" by MIchel Gauquelin many years ago and was very intrigued by the material presented...although the book "Electromagnetric Fields and Life" by A.S.Pressman gets more into the traditional physics of EMF...and the work of Jagdish Chandra Bose is more along the lines of The Secret Life of Plants...

I am having some interesting things going on too. My second batch of seeds will be almost a week old tomarrow. I have never seen any sprout upside down before. Almost all of them are jmgs. out of 32 cups, 6 different kinds had one that sprouted upside down. I had to pull the seed out of the soil, which had a nice soft coat by now and easy to remove, and orient the radical down into a hole. I can't be the only one seeing this go on. Frank

I had one this year, out of about 180, do the upside down thing. I did exactly what you did and promptly lost tract of it...! - Arlan

Thanks Ron

Frank - thank you for the post re: upside down sprouting of MG's. I had that happen to a couple of mine and wondered why that had happened...I think I ended up culling them as they came up late in a cup that I already had one MG transplant in.

Thanks Ron. I do suspect my plants have a secret life especially when I see overnight growth in the ones I talked to the day and week before. :)

Another idea especialy if you are planting outdoors is waiting until it is really warm with no cool nights because that heat and warm soil is what these little guys crave for growth.

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

I found a new Candy Pink seedling last night that must've sprouted in the last 48 hrs; it was upside down. It was hiding amongst an already-established seedling.

(Zone 7a)

Frank, glad you brought that up, too. There were a couple of upside down ones among my MG seedlings last year, too - it occurs to me that since the first greenery out of a seed is embryonic, that perhaps there are some growth regulators particular to that stage of development that may be sensitive to planetary gravity...Something funny going on between molecules containing some form of Iron and the earth's magnetic belt or something related to that...?

I hope y'all don't mind - I have no scruples about asking stupid questions when my curiosity gets going

I must do something about the vastness of my ignorance - will chase down Ron's book titles - thank you, Ron

bluespiral - there is no such thing as a stupid question! If we don't ask, we don't learn. And when one asks and someone answers, many learn. You and others have raised some points several times in this forum that I never would have thought about otherwise - it's all good! Thank you.

It`s morning glory 101. I never tire of anything that has to with morning glories. I understand the questions. Sometimes there could be several answers for each and all would be right. Sometimes experience backed with a little advice is the best teacher.

(Zone 7a)

Alrighty, then when I feel an urge coming over me to ask something off the wall, I'll let 'er rip :) Didn't Buddha say something about spending too much time asleep on the wall while more interesting things were going on, off the wall? Has something to do with attention...

did any ones sprout

Carmichael, CA

Interesting,

I placed a huge order with Cynda's Island Seeds. I was not happy with the service: 2 emails, almost a month to get, mailed 3 weeks after ordering, but so far I do have sprouts. They started sprouting very quickly, about 2-3 days. I don't knick, I just soak. We will see what happens to the other 15 I ordered...

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I have two healthy sprouts of wedding bells. I ordered several small orders from cynda and have had good service. I have actually only had one very bad ebay experience with seeds and they fixed it and I forgave them too. I`m growing them with a Russian Mammoth sunflower and one gypsy bride seedling. I`ll update later with results.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I just wanted to say I started 4 Wedding Bell seeds over the weekend, and I've got 4 healthy looking seedlings!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

yay!!!

Good news :) I can`t wait to see these in person.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

It might be Friday before my son will leave me alone long enough to take any pictures . . . but I will add them to my journal this weekend for sure!

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Arlan, can you hear me way up there. Do you orient the point of the seed down when you plant the seeds?? I don't bother. Maybe I should. I just thought there was enough geotropism goin on that they din't need it. I always do that with the large seeds, because you know the root comes out the point. Since you only had one, and I have a dozen by now. Do any of you guys follow any cultural ritual about seed position when planting.???

Ron may be right about the electromagnetic fields going on around them, with the heat mats and the lights. When the lights turn of they probably get a little seasick.

I read the secret life of plants , three times it was so good. The Kirlian effect really intrigues me. Imagine leaves giving off light.

Frank

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

Frank, no, I just poke a hole and drop the seed in. Very unceremoniously! - Arlan

both of my wedding bells came up within days

Mesilla Park, NM

I think my wedding bells have buds!!!! only thing is, I have to use the magnifying glass to see them..lol.. but they are coming. I can hardly wait to see everyones photos.
