This sounds crazy to many of you I'm sure, but I've never planted an oriental lily before and I'm wondering how long after I plant the bulb in the ground will it take for it to come up? Thanks for your help!!
How long does it take???
From personal experience, it can take weeks. Don't worry, they do come up, and once they do, they grow pretty fast. Just keep them protected from critters, if you have trouble with critters. The deer love them here, rabbits too. If you have it in a spot that has good drainage, that will help it too.
What type of oriental are you trying? They are beautiful and the fragrance, just perfect.
In our warmer zones, lilies grows rapidly once the soil warmed up. This winter I found some left over bulbs. Potted them in the unheated garage, they sprouted in 2 weeks approximately. Those are blooming for me right now, while the one established outdoor are forming buds. By the way, they multiply abundantly, those young bulbs may take a year or two to form flower buds. (It depends on the type of lilies).
I've got Stargazer and Commander in Chief and they still haven't broken the ground yet.
mjfulgham; which zone are you in may I ask? Most of my lilies are up and going. Though, last year I have much less bulbs springing up. These are currious plants. I'm not certain if they quietly develope underground at time. My stargazer got chopped in half while I was trying to plant other springbulbs last fall. (a mistake I try to avoid, but difficult). And boy! Talking about BIG bulb, this one was so large, I almost cry when I lost it.
I'm in 8b
Zone envy. You could grow alot more exotic plants there than I could. Some gardening friend in Tx. mentioned that 7b where he's. He found it was difficult to raise Oriental lilies. Mine doing fine here, especially when I plant them 6" deep into the ground, sometime 8" if they're larger bulbs. Unless squirrel, voles dug them up and eat them? I found apposum romping my garden once. Squirels here, is a terrible too. I'm not into "hunting", other than hunting for plants. Good luck with your lilies.
