Dizzy but still here

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm in the midst of a severe vertigo attack .. I have Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Besides being extremely dizzy and nauseous, one of the symptoms of BPPV is nystagmus which makes it impossible to read. I'm typing this with my eyes closed and software is reading it back to me. These attacks are usually confined to one ear. I've got it in both at the moment. I have an appointment to go get thrown around tomorrow (epley maneuver). Hopefully it will get the rocks in my head back where they belong. I can only get out of bed for a few minutes at a time.

I'll be back soon I hope ..

Hi X, I had that BPV too, and the Epley maneuver worked first time like a charm. I was so happy it was an ending that did not require medications to treat. I hope your session goes well too!

Oooooh no X! I have BPPV as well and just kicked a 5 week long attack....I haven't spun in a several days. Do you take Meclizine? I'll be praying that the maneuver helps you big time!

Boy do I feel for you. I had the dizzies a few weeks ago one night when I fell asleep on the sofa. I woke up to go to bed and I was extremely dizzy and naseous. I made it upstairs and basically fell into bed. I had problem with wax in my left ear and blamed being dizzy on that. I was okay when I woke up though. What a horrible experience that was. I can't imagine being like that for many days. I'm wondering why so many people have answered this thread and have the same problem. Geez, I really hope your therapy helped.

I have never had that problem, but I hope you are feeling better soon. Sounds awful!

Hi,

I'm back .. they nystagmus is gone and the dizzy and nausea almost gone .. thanks to all for the empathy and thoughts .. been catching up on what I've missed.

The worst thing about bppv when you are affected in both ears, you are totally incapcitated. I've been having to crawl from the bedroom to the kitchen to feed the kittys and was still falling over and bumping into walls on all fours. The nystagmus gets so bad you have to close your eyes even when sitting down or you will fall over.

I usually get a mild attack this time of year because of all the bending over and looking up working in the garden. For some reason I ignored the warning signs.

Thanks to everyone again!

It sounds like it must feel similar to being sea sick. I`m glad you are feeling better.

It's sea sickness times 10. As long as you are perfectly still and not breathing you are ok except for the nausea. The moment you move your head in the slightest you start spinning. This is the 3rd bad attack I've had. When it's only in 1 ear its manageable. When it's in both its devastating.

I can`t imagine seasick x 10!!!! Oh my goodness!!!! I`m really glad you are feeling better.

I second the sea sickness x 10. I've had 7 episodes since mid 2004 and it's always been the right side that was affected but the most recent attack hit the left. I can't imagine both ears at once X; that must've been super scary! I'm glad that you feel better.....it's very frustrating not being able-bodied when it's at its worst.
X, do you ever notice that you don't feel quite yourself the day before it happens? I tend to feel just out of it and the next day whamo.

I've never had this, but my husband has gotten it a few times. I thought it had something to do with his high blood pressure or a head injury he had when he was younger. I guess it just hits people for no reason!

I usually get warnings. When I move it's literally like part of me is not moving but follows a few seconds later.

We all literally have rocks in our head. It is what helps us with balance. With BPPV the rocks find their way into the labyrinth. The Epley maneuver is designed to move your head in such a way that the rocks are forced back where they belong. The procedure results are very dramatic. You go from being a total mess to a functioning human again in a matter of a few minutes.

I just happen to have a lot more rocks in my head than the average. I have to be very careful not to look down, bend over or look up for more than a few seconds. Gardening can be difficult because of that. I can only sleep on my left side and when I turn in bed it can only be from right to left or I have to sit up in bed to turn.

This episode was my fault because I ignored the warnings and they weren't persistant enough .. when I get the warnings, all I usually have to do is a modified Epley to stop it.
