Formal allee

Blacklick, OH

Any suggestions for which type of tree I should use for a driveway allee in central Ohio (zone 5)? I would prefer a conical type tree which may be lit with holiday lights. Thanks!!

A mixed allee would be best. Try your best to avoid the temptation of creating a nice soldier row of the same species.

That was a good thread, stressbaby. Thanks for sharing it.

While I don't at all disagree with the potential problems of monocultural designs, I think that it still has its place. As such, and heeding the advice in the thread that stressbaby sent, you'd be best served by also letting us know the site conditions of this allee, should you choose to remain with your original idea.

In order to find the best tree we'd need to be able to pick the plant which would do the best on that site in order to minimize or negate some of the problems that arise from a monocultural planting.

Another word for columnar habit in regards to trees is fastigiate.

Lombardy poplar is a popular choice, althought not usually recommended by horticulturists. Note that the author cited in the first link is Michael A. Dirr, not "Mike Durr".

The second link, while not specific to your situation, has info about some design considerations for planting trees, you might find something useful.
