Bush Morning Glory Germination Question

Clementon, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hi, I'm new to this particular forum but I had a Morning Glory specific question so I wandered over. I have grown Morning Glory vines and I always knick and soak the seed appx 24 hours. I've never had a problem with them. Although I know most people don't soak as long as I do, it seems to work great for me.

This year I have sought out bush MG's for their drought and heat tolerance, both of which I have all summer. But I don't see that they have the same soaking recommendations and these suckers are pretty small to try to knick. Can anyone give me some basic germination tips for them?

Normally I would start soaking in the evening, in really warm water, sitting on a gradually reducing heating thingy, and pot up in a dome type of seed starter the following evening when I get home from work.

Thanks so much for any tips!

Are you talking about Convolvus tricolor or Ipomoea carnea? Sorry but they are both referred to as "bush" type MG's.

Tricolor - Sorry! Should have included that.

I get a magnifying glass and nick mine, then soak them. You're right, the seeds ARE small.

Yikes! I think I'm out of my league. Magnifying glass and everything, LOL! Eeesh this is going to be a bear.

Yes and don't forget to put a white towel on the floor for the ones that jump out of your hands. They are easier to find that way. I have never started the tricolor inside, just outside, and they did fine, direct sowing without nicking for me. The smaller the seeds the harder they are to nick. Frank

In my zone I would not be direct sowing for another month at least so I think it will be wise to get a head start on these. They are soaking now!
