Honey bees more orangey

Bumble bees are my favorite they just go flower to flower and leave you alone. The stinkin' yellow jackets and wasps will sting you for no apparent reason( at least they do to me)

Carpenter bees are huge.....

And that's my lesson for today :)

Could you put barbed wire on top of the 6' fence???
I wanted to do that to block out my previous neighbors. Hee Hee

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks Jen! Now, if I have carpenter bees, should I be looking in my wood structures for their home?

Barbed wire couldn't keep my neighbors out. I think I'd have to enclose them in an opaque, sound-proof bubble. That would work for my son, too, now that I think of it....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes, the hole looks like this... It's amazing how it's a perfect circle. They don't actually eat the wood so the structure won't be damaged except for the hole. They won't destroy anything like termites or ants would.

Really? They don't? I thought they destroyed stuff. Well, that's a relief!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Jen, though I could not make out much in those photos - the copyright info covered them! I can look them up in Bugfiles or Google. As for the barbed wire, not sure I'm into the Stalag 17 look.

Victor - I love your sense of humor and pungent posts. :)

Harper - Seinfeld's Bubble Boy might give you some tips!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Louise!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

He he he... Is the bubble boy sound-proof? I think I have the noisiest neighbors in the town.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Harper - No! The Bubble Boy was , himself, quite noisy and offensive.....and I actually supervised a guy once that was sort of a Bubble Boy out of his Bubble, and he was just as offensive. Noisy neighbors are just not cool........they are what we call Drainers (as opposed to Sustainers)......many boundaries issues! I have nothing to offer, but I'll bet Victor would have some sage and funny advice! Hey, I just thought of something (Golden Rule- like....) What if you took your noisy neighbors a bouquet of your flowers and thanked them for the times they are quiet!???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would blast Paris Hilton's cd. I would first make sure someone else bought it for me and would get ear protection for the entire family.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good grief! Maybe I should be buried while I'm still alive.

I didn't even know she sang! I just thought of her as someone who is "just there" in front of any camera, all of the time. I'm ancient!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

She is. She can't, but that has not stopped her. Sometimes she's 'just bare' in front of any camera.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Victor - don't succumb....even if someone buys it for you. It's still one too many sales. And who would you ask to do such a thing???

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I did notice the "bare" spots. Absolutely pitiful.

Medford, NJ

Deer are most definately a problem here in southern NJ - I live in a neighborhood with a few wooded areas bordering it, houses on half acre lots, and houses completely surrounding us - I came around the corner into my back yard the otherday and almost ran right into 3 deer - in broad daylight!! They looked at me as if they were wondering what I was doing there!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Amazes me how all these bimbos continue to receive so much attention. Mind-boggling.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - back to the topic at hand! Bhavana - I have seen as many as 10 - 12 in my back!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Bimbos vs. Bambis.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Good one, Pirl! Very clever!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha - I was thinking the same thing when I saw Bhavana's post! Was going to comment on a hypothetical Paris Hilton deer. Hmmm.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe she is good for something: when we get exasperated with our kids we can think - thank God we're not Paris's parents!

The next door neighbor gave up and had an 8' mesh deer fence installed around her vegetable garden.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

A Paris Hilton CD wouldn't work. They listen to the worst music! I don't think they really hear it. They play the station that plays the same 5 songs over and over and over...

We've tried to cancel out their noise by playing John Coltrane, Marcus Miller, Steely Dan... WHATEVER, I don't think they like our music either.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ooh some great names there - good taste Harper!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Awww... shucks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Of course it can't touch Yoko Ono doing the primal scream thing.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

That's a good one! ((shiver)) I'm actually in good standing with my neighbors and they don't know how annoying they can be, so I probably won't address their noise levels unless it's just entirely unreasonable. Until then, I'm saving my pennies to buy several acres.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You and me both. Would love the nearest neighbor to be well out of primal scream range - 20 acres is a good start.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'll be happy with 10!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too. Even 5.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Definitely, but no less than that. I have my limits!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

My neighbors here are wonderful, they are far enough away I can't hear them but close enough where they bring me veggies and herbs from their gardens. :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Good grief! What would you do with 20 acres - or even five? I used to have .5 of an acre - and that was a lot to take care of - what would a five acre garden look like - how much staff would be required to maintain it? Or would most of it be left wild for the deer?

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Neighbors!! Our lots are narrow and we're right on top of each other. The lots are deep and border on a feeder canal with a towpath, so no neighbors on the backside. But I love my neighbors and they are wonderful. A widowed grandmother lives on one side and her son with 3 children live on the other side of her. They are in her yard most of the time and they wander over to mine. I hear, "Elner, can we walk through your garden and on the bridge?? " I love it and I'm glad others can enjoy my garden. The lady across the street is crazy and raises Yorkies (I won't tell you how many but she could probably be arressted) and they bark alot and she yells all the time but we all put up with her!! She has her good points - she stays up all night and guards the neighborhood for us and the dogs are cute and cuddley to hold. My other neighbor is a really sweet divorced lady who has let her wooded yard go natural. I'm very happy and content in my little neighborhood!! LOL Eleanor

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Seandor - too funny!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I certainly wouldn't garden on all of that land - though I would add lots of trees that I like. Leave most of it wild. A stream would be great.

Eleanor - great that you have nice neighbors and none of them are on your backside! Most of my neighbors are nice but I would like more space and privacy.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yup. I agree with Victor.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Should we start a new thread on neighbors...1 of the reasons we moved was to get away from the Jerry Springer soap opera going on next door...man could I tell you some stories!!!!
