Kinnikinnick: Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

It is going into the 60's today and we can finally see the ground emerging from it's white mantle. This great little ground cover seems to do quite well here in one of it's two forms, that of the lower growing, mat forming variety. The other form seems more upright and bushy and happens to be the one I have been getting locally since the initial purchase. This more upright form seems to be less thriftty in my situation and, truth be told, looks so different from the 'mat former' that the two really look bad teamed up together. Anyone know which is which based on my lame descriptions, cause I want more of the mat type and no more of the bush. Thanks, Ken

Northeast Harbor, ME

A. uva-ursi is native to the east coast and is pretty low (under 5"). It has swell glossy foliage and loves hot, dry, well drained situations. There's a huge patch of it down the street growing on rocks and the pine duff that has accumulated on top of them. I've also seen beautiful stands of it on Cape Cod, festooning sand dunes.

I also have a lot of it on the property that I work at. It doesn't do so well for me because the soil is far too rich and moisture retentive.

Gotta go, I think the roof's coming off!

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Around here 'Vancouver Jade' is the most commonly found cultivar which is groundcover and cascades nicely over a wall. They are also native in this area and are more commonly found in rock outcrops.
