Maple tree problem

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

I started this thread on the plant id page. If anyone knows about the diseases of trees, can you look at my pics and let me know.

Thanks Kellie

Those holes are from sapsuckers, I have them in my red maples. Sapsuckers feed on the sap under the bark, and also insects that are attracted to the sap. My trees also sometimes "bleed" from these holes. The bleeding doesn't harm the tree, but there is a small chance fungi could invade the holes. The crack looks like lightening damage or maybe a frost crack? (we seldom have frost cracks here)

I've seen that type of damage before. I think you've got a frost crack that allowed a pathogen to enter the tree. The holes are probably from sap suckers and they're no big deal.

I'd get a few opinions before paying to inject your tree. What's he going to inject it with if he doesn't know whether the infection is bacterial or fungal?

For real.... I ouldn't let them inject anythign either til you knew exactly what it was and only a patholgy lab can tell you for sure.

Not much but some of the Maples especially one of the newer red cultivars gets frost crack damage alot. The sun warms that spot durign the winter days and then the cold temps at night freez e it and that constantly freezing and thawing cracks and damages the trees.

All the crack damage I have seen has never been that dark though, might be like Escambi suggested and lightening.
