Look What I Got Today!
You're all set there aren't you Lin. Very nice package from a wonderful person indeed. Hope she is doing well. Nice of her to remember you. Have a great day
Laura
Thanks Laura. Allison is doing as well as can be expected with that awful debilitating disease. She has good days and bad. I had told her not to send my prize right away because she had so many trades she was needing to get out in January and February as well as a few Bingo prizes she donated! The past month and a half she was having a lot of pain and the Hospice Dr. was trying to get her meds right. She is on some kind of pain patch and the entire thing was too much, she didn't want to take morphine because of it making her sleep all the time and the RX patch was doing the same thing I think, so they are working it out with half the patch covered so she is getting what she needs for now with the pain medication. She kept reminding me that she was going to send me a prize package and I kept telling her, no hurry .... with all the plants I have, I have enough to keep me busy for a few months! I had no idea she would be sending so much stuff ... and the plants to boot! She is a wonderful gardening friend, a very dear and generous lady, both with her knowledge and her plants! I know a lot of us miss her here on DG, but we keep in contact through home email.
Lin
Lin, what a great bunch of things Allison sent you. I wish she was here on the forum.
YOu must have been so happy opening that box. I wonder where she gets all those different size containers. I need those really little ones but have no idea where to get them. I buy the 2 1/2 " pots from Bluebird greenhouse. I need the smaller ones like you show above.
wow! Great box :~)
Lana
Wow, what an awesome Bingo Prize!!!!
Thanks Y'all, I think so too! Allison is a very generous lady!
Wow Lin! That's a wonderful box you've got there! Isn't it fun to get a box of goodies in the mail! :o)
Lin,That Box Allison sent is amazing. Looks like you will be set for awhile : )She truly is one generous lady and a very dear friend : )
Does anyone know where I can get those tiny white or clear plastic cups that are in the pic above?
Maureen,They are little restaurant/deli condiment cups.I would love to know where to buy them too.I will check with my sister to see if she can order them thru her workplace. If she can I will gladly send you a pkg.Up until now I have been saving mine to use from when we go out to eat.I get some crazy looks when I ask everone if I can have their empty salad dressing cups.LOL
Edited to add: Lin and I must have been typing again at the same time : ))

Oh Cedar ... That's a much better deal than Rob's prices!
You guys are too funny;-)
I need coffee too.
I have the 2 1/2 inch cups (is that a pic of it all the way on the left?)
I would like the 3 on the right side. I would only need a few of each, so Sam's and costco would have packages of like a 1,000. Cedar, thanks for sharing.
Have a good day guys, i'm off to make myself pretty to go to the bank and supermarket.
Maureen
Thanks for the link Cedar.
You are welcome Maureen.: )
Lin,I couldn't believe the difference in price between the 2 places.I wonder how they come up with what to charge for things? Funny thing is both places probably have the same supplier.
Maureen: I only have 6 of those little teeny black ones, which I will use for leaves, but I will NEVER use those two clear ones on the far right .... if you want some, let me know ... the one on the left says on the bottom: Dixie 2oz, (There must be at least 100 in that package, and the one on the right says: Sweetheart 1oz (About 50 in that stack). I know you can buy them by the case at Costco or Sams, but that must be Thousands!
I would be thrilled to share some of these! I don't grow many from leaf and I know I will never use this many little cups in a lifetime!
Let me know!
Yes Cedar, I agree, they probably do have the same supplier, and they purchase wholesale, but I guess they feel they can get the price they ask. Some people don't shop around at all ... as for me, I like to shop and LOVE Bargains! I would never pay the price Rob's is asking when I could get them somewhere else so much cheaper.
The solo cups that I grow leaves in come from the local grocery store....they are the ones you use for brushing your teeth . Then once they are rooted, then I use those from Selective Gardens......or Bluebird....since those from the grocery store don't have drainage, I use a cigarette lighter to burn 2 holes on the bottom...
Lin, Allison sent me the exact same plants as you in a trade.....this will be fun watching them grow together!!!!! We can post blooms, etc...and new babies....I am now ready to start babies from the Episcia 'Grey Lady'......have been to nervous to do it yet....I have 3 stolens.....terrified!!!
I miss Allison so much, but i do email her all the time back and forth....she is the one who told me about the fabulous pots in 4, 5, 6, 61/2 and 8" which are very short...great for so many different kinds of plants like rex begonias and members of the gesneriad family.
Yeah Gail: I have those little Solo cups too and I just poke a couple of holes in the bottoms of those for rooting leaves. I have put two and three leaves in a cup for rooting, depending on the size of the leaf. Someone only uses one leaf per cup.
Oh Gail, yes we can watch our "Sibling Plants" grow up together! We can send pictures back and forth thru e-mail .... such fun!
I didn't know that you could more than one leaf down in the solo cup?? Can you still separate them or do you do it with the idea of having just a big beautful plant with several crowns? I like Av's both ways....love to see them take off and grow wildly...I call her AV of many crowns....may have to separate them because she rarely has more than a few blooms at one time.
Oh Gail: That is a Very Pretty One, even with many crowns! I wouldn't touch it ... I would just feed it more with a blooming type fertilizer and see if you would get more blooms that way! Oh, she's so pretty!
Oh yeah ... I don't think I should probably be putting more than one leaf per each little solo cup ... it does make it crowded when the babies begin popping up! I'm just lazy ... but getting better ..... really! I am trying!
Lin, you are so nice to offer to share. I would love some, maybe I can send you leaves in trade or postage?
What types of av's are you intersted in? I have minis and standards (but mostly mini's)
Maureen: You are too kind .... Wow! Are you truly offering AV leaves in trade for Plastic Cups???!! I would love to try a couple of leaves if you have some to spare. I have about a dozen little mini's that I got from Starfly/Eunice about a month ago. I lost about 4 or 5 out of the bunch she sent me, they were real teeny and just didn't survive. A few of the ones I have are labeled: Steel Blue, The Martian, B Mans Etna, Sweet Amy Sue, Glade Jewel and Hoshige 385. I am not certain all of these are mini's ... I may just be thinking that because they are all small babies. I have never grown mini's before now. Someone said they require the same exact care as standards so I hope that's the case.
I will gladly send you a bunch of those little pots/cups for a couple of leaves. Please don't give me but a couple ... I am really at my limit ( actually over my limit ) on space! I think that's the reason some of my AV's are growing "funny" .... because of overcrowding on the stands!
I just got your address from the Addy exchange, so I will put these in the mail on Monday! I have to go to the P.O. first thing on Monday morning to mail a package to another DG'er for a trade we are doing!
Lin
Lin, I'll dmail you which leaves I have.
Maureenpm00, I am still potting up the original minis I just happened to find in a nursery.....I want to try and remember when I staart taking leaves off to dmail you......I would rather propagate than anything in the world among the plants.....more fun than even growing....trying to catch up with everyone else. I have more leaves than i do space!! (LOL)
Lin knows that I am growing for her, too...
MY DREAM GARDEN: A VERY large room built onto my house for an accumulation of plants! My dream was to always have a VERY large Indoor Gardening room .... Wall to Wall Windows, Slate Floor, High Glass Ceilings, Palm Trees and Flowering Trees,
( I would need a hammock to hang between two trees), Orchids, Tropicals abounding ... a large waterfall or fountain ...... and of course AV's!! Oh yeah .... and a small table and chairs in the middle so I could sit with a cup of tea and enjoy the view!
Maybe I should design my own house .... just a huge building, all glass, no interior walls at all ... a few pieces of necessary furniture, a sink with running water. The bathroom and shower could be within the trees somewhere for privacy! Hey! I wouldn't even need a kitchen ... if I had fruit trees and a little veggie patch, what more could I need? ...... well maybe a frig to hold my diet vanilla pepsi! LOL.
...... Boy! Do I have dreams, or what? That's always a Day Dream .... night time ones aren't nearly as good!
Lin
Oh Wow Lin,I Love the way you dream. How relaxing!!Your DREAM GARDEN sounds like the *Perfect* place.I got lost in there for a moment...ahhhhh : )) I am going to copy your post and when I have a yucky day I am just going to read it again.I love where it takes me.I read it and all the stress disappears for me.I Love that!!!
Nancy: Isn't it the most relaxing, "Perfect Garden" .... don't you think we all desserve one?
Yes Lin,That is sooo *PERECT* I just can't quit thinking..or should I say Dreaming about it : ))
You got me going....mind racing and wandering as to your perfect room......I do believe you just caused me to rethink my front porch......just reading your idea of a dream room starts my head spinning as to how to get rid of 50 mph winds and close in my porch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks, LIn
Hee Hee ... I Knew a few of you would just Love that dream! Don't we all need a room like that? Or at least close? No 40-50 mph winds Gail, but a nice tropical breeze would be okay! We finally got some much needed rain today, but it is very windy here too, they said we could have 40 mph winds!
Gail: Did you have any of the Severe Storms/Tornado's in your area of Texas? There's been some pretty Intense Storms thru Texas and heading East ... there were Tornado watches and warnings out for the panhandle of Florida and NE Florida and all the way up to North Georgia, but thank goodness the severe stuff passed us by! We've had the weather radar at Accuweather.com on the computer all day, watching that stuff. Hope everyone is safe and out of harms way!
Lin
I can't believe that you, too, use accuweather.com......the problem with it is that whatever it says for Taft, we add 10mph winds to it and about 5 degrees cooler than what it actually is.....we are safe here....just feeling sorry about the crops for the farmers and gardeners, but mainly farmers. They have already replanted twice in some places. It rains, the ground crusts on top, the wind blows and blows away the soil and crop....
Just watch and see......I have already announced my rejection of cut flowers until I regain my faith to try again!!!!!
At my age, I am going to grow whatever works the best.........
Thank you all for this thread...as I am needing to find some little pots for all of the babies my leaves are having. Goodness gracious. Guess this is the mother and farm girl and nurse all in me. The link above was a good one. Any other thoughts for sites?
Thanks, Laura
I have spent the day pulling up old threads with fabulous instructions by Allison....just read one on propagating episcias....the best threads are the old ones back in 2006......maybe someday...I will just pull these up for everyone....if you click the number of the post, (assuming that you have already logged in) it pops right up. I have learned more from her threads!!!
gail
Selectivegardens don't have the perfect 21/2" pot.....they come from www.bluebird.com
Bluebird also has the shallow pots in 4, 5, 6, 61/2 and 8".....
