CLOSED: fuzzy nymph

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it's a true bug, and the closest I can come to IDing it is the nymph stage of the assassin bug. Elongated probiscus, teardrop shaped body (smallest at the head), with white fuzz like a mealybug, less than 1/2" long.

Any input? (It bit me on the leg years ago and there is still the oddest, faint discoloration there.) Just curious. Thanks!

Does it look like one of these? Go to this site and there are some pictures that you might want to look at.

Thanks, makshi -- interesting information, but for all I've looked, I can't find a definitive description of this nymph. It was like a little assassin in a mealybug suit, and the bite hurt like the dickens. Unfortunately I swatted and then didn't collect it. I sure wish I had.

That's not it, fly_girl. It was shaped entirely differently. Still looking! And thanks, that's a cool site!

I found this -- it's not as fuzzy as the one that got me, but it's fuzzy. I wonder if it's fuzzier younger. It has the basic shape as best I remember it.

I don't know if it is or not. I guess they are good bugs right?

makshi, the 14th picture down is the same white fuzziness as the one that got me. Just over halfway down is one that, while it's not white, is the right shape ("Masked Hunter named Pepi"). There's a blue one near the bottom as well. So, I'm getting close to saying it was a masked hunter, and now I'm SURE it was some kind of assassin bug.

Ooooh oooooh oooooh now I can tell people that, some years ago, an assassin was out to get me! Very nearly took my leg...

Hey, you live around here, you gotta have SOMETHING vaguely exciting to talk about...

They're good unless they bite you! But from what I gather you want them in your garden. Thanks so much for your help!

Brig, You are so funny.

Brig...if you name your masked hunter Pepi....now, That is something to talk about.

I could only name it that on it's little tiny tombstone... not many bite me and get away with it!
