Probably not chickens, but lighter birds can still fly if both wings are clipped. Clipping one limits flying to a downward spiral.

Okay, I could get to the video from here when I just checked, so you can hopefully see my Pandora trying so so hard to "share" a box in the garage with her buddy Oona McCool ( who is NOT amused)

Also, unless you have a real reason to, why bother clipping? My gals mostly stay in thier fence anyway. The young standard hens will fly out sometimes but the older ones and all the bantams stay in, and they never go too far anyway.

afraid the they'll get out and not come back in the coop.fly away...Tracey

Tracey, they will always come back to the coop. That is their home. That is the one place where feel safe. I have clipped many a chick and guinea over time and I always only clip one wing. They soon realize that they can't fly and quite trying. I would only clip the wings if you feel like you absolutely need to. The ones I clipped were the ones, month in, month out that would fly to the tippy-top of my oak trees, refuse to come down at dark and I knew an owl/hawk would eat them for supper, quickly. :)

Can anybody tell me how to clip my chickens wings? Does it matter which wing is clipped? Which part of the wing actually gets clipped? and how much of the wing is clipped? I do not want to hurt them. I have 21 egg laying hens, and 5 roosters. Of course, I have seperated the roosters from the hens.

Prospect, PA(Zone 6a)

As far as your egg problem goes, once you start feeding them the layer food, it usually takes 2-3 weeks before they may lay eggs, depending of course on the weather you are having. The weather here has been a bit chilly, so we only started getting a few here and there within the first week. But this week, having removed the roosters from the hens, and having a little bit of warm up, we are starting to see 10-12 eggs per day. Some of the eggs are still smaller, so we believe they are not all laying just yet.

Clip the long flight feathers at the tip of the wing. Do you want their flight to spiral down to the right or left? Clip that wing.
