Very nice shot!
Ok, I'm confused as to what's going on with mine. There were two females that would be at the feeder several times a day and at least one male earlier this week. Now, they've just disappeared. :(

I've got Lantana, Salvia and Coral Bells all in bloom underneath the feeder, and the honeysuckle they go for every year is blooming as well. But, no hummers anymore.

Any ideas as to what could be going on?

patti, Beautiful pic!!

indiana, don't worry you'll get more. Those were just migrators.

Thanks Pelletory, I feel much better now!!
I am new to feeding the hummers -- just started last summer, so I don't know all the "ins and outs" yet. :)

That is a good picture. I told my sister that mine looks so shiny and new. I just love how it almost doesn't look real.

My goal for the summer was to try to get the hummingbirds to feed from a hand held feeder. Today I was successful! My sister is coming tomorrow to try to get some pictures of it. It was incredible to be so "up close". At one point it was hovering only an inch from my sunglasses for several seconds!
I'll be sure to post a picture if I have one tomorrow.

Thats so great Patty!!!! Can't wait to see the pics. Congrats!

BTW I saw my first Female Hummer of the season! Still trying to get a pic.

hey Patty where did you get the hand feeders? I found some a few years ago online, but no luck in my search now. I always thought that would be cool, but was waiting until no kids in the house to come busting out the door!! I have an empty nest now so want to try it.

I bought these on Ebay. They're not really designed as hand held since they come with a hanging wire, but they're small (5 inches tall x 1 1/2 wide), kind of like a large plastic test tube with a "flower" on the red bottom part. I bought 5 of them (because that's the only way they sold them). I would be happy to send you one since I sure don't need 5. They're a little leaky if you don't get the bottom on all the way, but not too bad. Certainly good enough for my experiment.
I took my feeders down today and put them all on my patio table directly in front of me. Then I held the "hand held" one and waited patiently. It only took about 10 minutes before a curious little bird went looking in the original spot. Not finding the feeders, she ventured to the patio table and begin feeding at the feeders on the table (only a foot from me). After sampling those she came to mine and began feeding there too.
I had on a red shirt and red baseball cap (which she was especially fond of!). I was able to get her to feed four times today. Hopefully she'll cooperate for a photo shoot tomorrow! :-)

Oh my goodness!! That would be great! I looked at those today, but wondered what the heck would I do with 5!

Oh, what fun to get them to feed so close. I am going to have to try this myself. I have a really small tube feeder and I am going to try that. Let get some pics if we can.

I had to take the pictures myself since my sister decided not to come over! Anyway, I managed to take the picture! Here it is.

That's a great picture, and I love all of your Columbine!! Were you nervous holding the feeder and having the hummer get so close to you? That is definitely a thrill I want to be able to enjoy when the "resident" hummers come back.

Great job Patty! Thanks for the pic!

Yes your columbine are gorgeous!

Thanks. I always laugh about the columbine. It came from one of those "roll out" mat gardens many years ago. I never expected it to grow, but that whole garden maintains itself all season from that silly mat! From baby blue eyes in the early spring, columbine now and balsam impatiens in the late summer until frost! (Kind of embarrassing to admit.)

I wasn't nervous today. I was actually shaking yesterday I was so excited and nervous, but today I was able to just enjoy it. It is thrilling although my son just rolls his eyes like a typical teenager!

Glad you were able to get a pic Patty. I can't wait to try that now!!
I always wondered about those mats. Maybe to fill in some empty spots.

I believe I bought it at Menards and it was the "shade garden" in the blue box. I've seen it there every year since then. I was certainly suprised for sure!
